Actually, the TSA statement says nothing about batteries, just that you may be asked to power up electronic devices. A CPAP machine may have a fan on it, but it certainly is an electronic device. The original purpose of this thread was to simply ask whether anyone, from their personal experience, had been asked to show that their CPAP machine "powers up" when returning to the USA from overseas.

I also have a quick trip... not worried about the USA where I sail through TSA pre-check... but I will be sure to report on Frankfurt and the gate security on flights from AMS to the USA. Security everywhere has to see dozens of CPAP machines a day or more...

I never used to think about it, massive headaches and heart racing all night, I set ANFO charges for one and a half years, was covered in ammonia nitrate every nite, skin was on fire as it soaked in. At the end of the shift I could barely walk to the truck. That probably explains the heart problems, back then it was all about getting thru the shift. Jim

My return trip from FRA via AMS is Monday next, the 28th. I will post as soon as I land. In AMS, each US bound gate has its own dedicated security. I don't have any real statistics, but wouldn't you bet that the prevalence of CPAP machines is highest among Americans over other countries... just a hunch. Like I said, they have to see dozens of them every day!

The problem is that we don't know for sure if TSA thinks that "electronic" and "electric" mean the same thing. Is there a TSA definition of "electronic" devices?

I've traveled to southern Mexico several times in the past 2 months on business.... never had an issue with my machine

1 time TSA had me open the RESMED carrying case before scanning & during the rest of the trips, it was treated like a regular carry on bag.

I flew international last week, Seoul South Korea to USA.

Security took my small screwdriver that I have carried in my brief case for a couple of years on many flights. No questions about my CPAP.

The people who run security are missing the point. Its pretty easy to put an explosive in a portable electronic device that still powers up.

I think more OSA due to the excessive number of people being obese is what is happening here. USA way down in the list as far as best is concerned, less bang for your back all around.
