Very few sleep medicine practices offer good training and support to patients, especially new patients. Then companies like cpap.com are faulted when the clueless patient has trouble using what was prescribed.

The solution for you is to read, read, read and study posts in cpaptalk.com and ask questions, questions, questions. Get yourself educated on the CPAP process and become a successful user.

Fill out your equipment profile and tell us some details about your diagnosis and your prescribed machine settings.

And I don't have any problem with those who chose to immediately take Mr. Joseph to the woodshed.

Sharry, I'm with you not liking unkindness. You mentioned being new around here, so you may not be aware that during a period of time in the not too distant history quite a number of new members and guests on this board were fake, created by someone who thrives (notice I did not use past tense) on convincing members their bizarre or pathetic story is real then sitting back and watching others try to save them, or they'd plant a statement sure to draw a firestorm. When I've suspected that, I'd rather walk away and not join their games. The more outlandish the story and conduct, the more likely it was to be fake. After observing that time frame, I admit I became jaded. Had to sort through my inclination to walk away or try to help just in case they were real. My tolerance level became quite low, but even so, it's not my style to open fire without being clear on my target. I'd rather err on the side of being thought a fool than risk actually being one. It's hard in today's internet society to not become jaded. Fakery is rampant, reputations built or torn down by design rather than what is deserved. But back to this forum, when I first came here in 2006, the first time I witnessed a discussion like this thread, it rocked my idyllic cpaptalk world. This is nothing new or even due to suspected fakery. Hate to admit it, but it doesn't have nearly that effect any more. People will be who they are, and I can't expect everyone to speak or act like me. Do I think it is sometimes unfair? Yes. Does it cross my mind those being harsh may have some insight I don't? Yes. It just is what it is. I speak up when I feel I should. I just don't feel compelled to fight everyone's battle. That's the beauty of a community. One person doesn't have to do it all. There are others who will jump in when they feel it is merited. Didn't intend to say all that, just hoping you're not disillusioned enough to be grieved over it. Been there. Done that. Thanks for your input here.

Then you can slander the DME’s, you can name them, slander the doctors, you can name them, slander the tech, you can name them, etc…… Keep going…. As long as you are not venting against CPAP.com…..now….now!

Thank you for that explanation. I realize there's a lot for me to learn about this forum and the people in it and why they react to things the way they do. I don't like what I've seen recently and felt the need to speak up. But obviously not everyone agrees with me and that's okay too. If everyone was just like me life would be pretty dull. I'm not seriously grieved by any of this or disillusioned. I'm just going to have to learn to ignore the stuff I don't like and be grateful for the helpful people that do exist on this forum.

Actually this thread has been helpful in a couple of ways...

...first it has enlightened me on how the BBB operates (Maybe I should have gone to Stanford).

More importantly it has kind of shed some light on a situation that most of us don't really think about. I pretty much take it for granted that my xPAP machine will fire up every night until I decide the technology is too old. I never really though about what I would do if my machine just stopped working (This has nothing to do with the OP's post or CPAP.com). And I am not talking about a recent purchase that is still under warranty.

Could I get a loaner? Would insurance pay for any of the costs? Where would I ship my machine? This is tougher if you don't have a DME orcan't/won't use the one where you purchased the machine 3, 4, or more years ago.

A year ago a neighbor gave me an S-8 because he said he didn't need it anymore. I told him I would hold it for him when he wants it back, but I would use it as a backup and then figure out what to do, rather than having to scramble. If I did not have it, I think it would be wise to find an older used machine, even an old brick, that could get me by for a few weeks at a minimum.

Everyone if they can afford it should have a backup machine and also a power backup system in case you loose power for an extended period of time.

You will find a great deal of loyalty here to cpap.com for providing what many consider to be an exceptionally good forum. Nothing wrong with being loyal.

Also, if a supplier allows his customers to abuse him, his costs go up and the prices he charges us good customers will have to go up.

I also have my doubts that anything is wrong with the machine. The patient probably needs help understanding how it works.

*lol* I get it, you're just having us on.... when a DME sells a used machine as "new" or gives the person endless shit about getting replacement stuff, I'm pretty sure the patient knows how it's working...

You are quite wrong on that point. The forum is famous for showing patients how they can take care of themselves if they get a little education and develop an understanding.

Like most things in the marketplace, you can choose not to buy somewhere that refuses good service and/or value. If CPAP.com treats you good, then keep coming back. If you've had bad experiences (I haven't personally) then simply don't buy from them. There is no gun pointed to your head on this website.

The marketplace will eventually sort it all out. And no, I'm not of the laissez-faire Atlas Shrugged persuasion, in case you were wondering. It's just common sense. I think the Goodman's do get extra points tho for going above and beyond the call of duty while keeping this site running in spite of the hit-and-run nature of some of the people who post here. I don't know that I'd be that mellow if I was in their position.
