This eight-year-old post was just what I needed. Clear, easy to follow steps that I used to fix a maddening problem. My S9 was whistling so loud that I couldn't muffle it and getting to sleep was impossible when each breath was followed by a whistle. I got the S9 apart, cleaned, and back together with no problems, other than a stripped torx bit. There was also a hunk of clear plastic that rattled around inside that I removed.
Thanks so much for the procedure and photos.

What did the foam look like inside your S9...and how old is your machine?

And maybe the plastic hunk is needed to make things work properly?

There should be no 'clear plastic' rattling around in the machine.

Maybe it's this piece...if so, it will be nice and Quiet!

I don't know if these are your teardown pics (posted on Imgur), but this looks like a good teardown of the pieces.
Maybe @Doncpap48 will point out the offending piece that he didn't place back in.
...plus, I really am curious as to the condition of the foam after all this time.

The foam in my machine was dusty, but otherwise in good shape. I don't know how old my machine is...over 5 years old, I think.

I'm pretty sure the clear plastic part I found in my machine was the end of one of the tabs that secure the filter holder. My filter holder is missing (I took it off late one night hoping that would stop the whistling). After cleaning and reassembling the machine, I attached the filter with duct tape.

Was the piece inside the air chamber? or just rattling around inside the outer case?
