Just a reminder to those not used to dealing with such cold. When it gets cold enough that pipes freezing is a possibility, and not the norm for your area, keep a trickle of water running through the lines most likely to freeze. That'll keep them from freezing, unless it really gets a lot colder than the norm. One winter in McCall, Idaho I had a small business. It was a lot colder than usual so I adjusted the toilet tank valve to run a continuous trickle. Had it that way for about 3 months.

We do need rain tho!
I live in California as well, and have learned to be very quiet during this time. I see we did get rain last night in my area. That's a very good thing.
Yes... a very good thing! How about sending some my way?! News says we are going to have to conserve water. That means limited toilet flushing and showers. Not fun!

Weather Conditions: Just got off the phone with a friend who lives in Scotland. She said that it's been snowing since early this morning. The snow is nearly waist high and is still falling. The temperature is dropping far below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force. Her husband has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare. She says that if it gets much worse, she may have to let the drunken bastard back in.

Yep, just a trickle sometimes is not enough.
Adequatley insulating the pipes might have been better.
Or even doing both.
But sometimes, no matter how hard you try, they will still freeze.

The pipes were wrapped with heat tape. This normally works.

In an ironic turn of events it's 4° warmer in Parma, ID than it is in Hammond, LA where I used to live, 27° vs 23°. It's only 41° in Las Vegas. No wonder no one is responding to my Craigslist ad for my Goldwing motorcycle for sale!
How's everyone getting along with the cold? Very many losing power, and thus their CPAP?
Those who go south for the winter, often get it.

Building code in Canada requires plumbing in exterior walls to be installed on the warm (inward) side of the insulation and vapor barrier. We've been getting down to -24C (-11F) at nights, and have had no issues with the plumbing, nor have we had to run the taps. We also have minimum R-24 in all walls and R-40 in the attic, with a 90,000 BTU/h furnace to heat a 1800 square foot house. My kids walked to school in a -39C wind chill on Tuesday (schools were still open.) Someone once said there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. They were dressed in four layers of clothing with good winter coats (Canada Goose), scarves and two layers of gloves, so they were good to go.
My parents in-law were up all night recently because of loud cryoseisms in their area (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryoseism) which sounded like their foundation was cracking due to the cold. You know it is cold when the ground itself goes "boom" to relieve the stresses caused by the cold.
The CPAP-related issue I've had with all the freezing cold weather is I have to keep the humidity in the house low (30% RH at 22 C) to avoid condensation on the windows. As a result, I'm using up almost an entire humidifier tank every night, whereas in the fall I could go three days on one tank. It's a bit of a pain having to fill the reservoir every night before going to bed, but in six short months it will be summer...
