When I'm laying in bed awake before falling asleep my RR is in the 12-14 range. When I'm actually asleep, my RR goes up to 14-16. My tidal volume also drops by half or more. As Pugsy often points out, everybody has their own individual respiratory patterns but several people have told me, or I've read on this forum, that my pattern is pretty normal, plus my target ventilation is in line with what my S9 Adapt firmware thinks is normal. Other things affecting your RR also need to be considered like drugs, afflictions, smoking, general fitness and so forth. BTW, here's how I tell when I'm really sleeping:

I would tend to disagree with you on this point, John. IMO respiratory rate (f) is a far more sensitive marker of general respiratory status (especially in this patient group) than tidal volume (Vt).

That said, certainly all information is good information, and we should also include minute ventilation (VE)(the product of Vt x f) in this discussion.

As someone that uses a an ASV, I would agree with your statement UNTIL I fell asleep. Then when I'm headed toward a bad spate of central apneas it's really shallow breathing time. Trying to sustain my breathing has killed the bearing on an older ASV unit! (Fortunately Resmed replaced it under warranty). The difference is that this is poor central control of the respiration and not poor respiratory effort.

If however we are awake, the respiratory rate will be higher for almost everyone if there is naturally a weak respiratory effort. Learning to breathe deeply and exercise the diaphragm is one way to slow the respiratory rate. And yes, the conscious effort to deepen our breathing impacts our sleeping bodies.

I've switched to klonopin and bpm8 ipap max 18cm epap 4-9cm and I slept much better last night
there are other people here who are on klonopin, of course there may be long term side effects, but at the same time it is FDA approved

Stop hijacking threads.... no one cares about your drug use but you. So many drugs are FDA approved but it doesn't mean that you can use them for what only you think they are prescribed for.

Klonopin was mentioned in the opening post. How is this post hijacking the thread.?

Perhaps in this particular situation the post may be appropriate, but those of us familiar with Sickwithapnea17 are pretty fed up with his/her behavior on this forum. This poster has a history of hijacking threads, usually after his/her own threads are met with answers not to his/her liking (but are pretty darned accurate). SWA17 feels, I guess, that if he/she posts THEIR questions in other people's threads, those of us familiar won't notice. That hasn't worked out too well.

And if SWA17 is on schedule, let the cursing commence.

Edited to add: I have no proof, but I am thinking that SuddenlyWornOut45 & Sickwithapnea17 *might* the same person. I could be wrong, obviously, but something is making me go "hmmmm" --

I understand what you're saying and I imagined that was probably related to some history with the poster. We just don't know how many others are lurking and perhaps have the same question, and if we just answer based on a poster's posting history, others might not get the answers that they need.

I'm 100% with Madalot.
Some people are so full of themselves and their delusions (and drugs)
that they can't understand when they are WRONG--yes, YOU!

Thanks, CF! Sometimes I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone with SWA's posts. It's the same stuff over and over and over and over and over and over.........

And I'm not the one with the foul mouth either...
