Ultrasonic humidifiers are getting more popular than ever,
But they require distilled water. Just a thought about why sales are up.
Also, more folks are frightened of everything, and will do silly things to feel "safe",
including DRINKING the nasty stuff.

I don't think the well water I drank as a kid would have ever passed the health department tests. Actually, all the bad stuff in the water is what helped me to have a tough immune system. That along with the bits of manure that dropped into the milk bucket in the spring while milking the cows!

I have never actually noticed a shortage where I live. Hell its like they are giving it away sometimes because there is so much of it. I go to buy it and find out it is on sell for buy one get 20 free. Maybe we have a surplus or we are getting all of the distilled water you are supposed to be getting. Probably a government project that is costing the tax payers billions. Either way there is tons of it here.

My only problem is that it is usually on the top shelf! Once when I could not find it, I spoke to management and it appeared.
