Tell him the truth: You were awake most of the night, but kept the mask on because you were hoping you'd drop off to sleep. (This will earn you kudos.) And since you were awake for 4 hours and only slept for 1.5 hours, you believe the data from this night is not particularly reliable.

There is a thing called sleep transition centrals. I get them too. Knowing what they are made a huge difference to me. No it is not an anxiety attack, it is sleep apnea. I get my breathing and heart beat settled down and then go back to falling asleep.
I may have the Sleep-wake transition disorder and it seems that not much can be done about it.

I intend to do just that.
The exact same thing happened again last night. I was asleep 1 hour and 50 minutes in the beginning with an AHI during that period of 0.50. I then laid there wide awake for the next 2 hours and 20 minutes and my overall AHI for the entire 4:10 was a whopping 5.8! You can look at the charts on SH and see exactly what I'm talking about. I know he's not using SH but I intend to print it out and take it with me today.

I'm going to ask about this as well.

Old Dude,
I need to delete the post that I posted here from the Consumer Reports b/c it's copyrighted.
I hope that you had enough time to read it.

On one hand it is a common thing that happens to a lot of people sometimes, on the other hand an ASV will deal with it if it happens a lot. That is what it is designed for - central apneas.

Well robysue, I did indeed tell him just as you suggested. Bottom line is that he seemed pretty much unconcerned about an occasional number in the 5 range as long as my average AHI was what he considered "good". He basically said that he sees no difference between an AHI of 2 and an AHI of 5, and that I was doing great. He was concerned about the amount of sleep I'm getting (as am I) but not the quality as far as the numbers are concerned. He then put me on a one year recheck.
Avi, he also said he handn't heard of sleep disturbances with Xanax and thought it might help.
He also gave me a fairly stern warning about unplanned hospital stays and making sure they put me on therapy if such a thing should occur. He intimated that there had been some recent tragedies and that even a colonoscopy required a CPAP. I think my original diagnosis of AHI =131 scared him a bit-he said he'd only seen two in that range before.
Oh, and he did say that the sudden "gasping" for air that I described was a form of hypnic jerk, not uncommon and I should forget about it.
