Ric:
That'san interesting suggestion about the Afrin. Acknowledging the issues that it is not to be used reguarly, that's a good idea to see how it my impact the numbers.
Hypop's are where most of my AHI comes from. It would be interesting to see how much is congestion related.
If that is the case, then what does that mean? SInce you are registering HI because of congestion are they really Hypop's or really flow disruptions/restrictions because of congestion?
Also, does it affect your Snore, SI?
It seems like an interesting experiment to consider.
Nice AHI, BTW -
I wonder if anyone has experimented with C-Flex on/off to see if it effects the numbers - if you do better without it?
Best,
Tom

My understanding of HI vs FL is that it is a question of magnitude and duration and the
shape of the airflow curve, without regard to etiology (i.e. it could be mechanical resistance or central in nature).
LINK: "Hypopneas vs Flow Limitations". If so, I would think that all of the above (OA, HI, FL, and even snores) might be affected swollen membranes in the airway. Until now I haven't really pondered that.
Roztom wrote:Also, does it affect your Snore, SI?
That's another issue I have never pondered. Now that you raise the question, I'm looking at MyEncore charts, (Daily SI, Daily FLI, Av. Apnea Duration), of the 9 "Afrin nights" since Jan 26, 8 show an OI of zero, 6 show an SI less than 1 (my avg SI=3.6). In the same interval I show 18 FLI=0, nine of which are on the nine "afrin nights". Correction: make those "generic oxymetazoline" nights.
You may be on to something.

WOW!!!!
Ric:
That's really interesting. so is the machine giving us numbers based on congestion vs. unemcumbered airway events?
I suppose the best way to know is to compare open sinuses vs. congested like you have.
I notice with me one side is either partially blocked or blocks thru the night.
Makes you think how much of the numbers being reported are a reflection of sinus blockage & flow restriction vs actual OSA/Hypop's.
I'm going to look into this also & try some experiments. Very interesting Ric.

Hi, I put my ahi AT 3 TO 3.5 BUT AS WITH SEVERAL OTHERS,MY oa INDIEX RANGES FROM 0 TO SOMETIMES 1 OR 1.5, IT IS THE HYPOPNEAS THAT BRING THE TOTAL UP. hOWEVER, iT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT HYPOPNEAS CAN ALSO CAUSE HEALTH PROBLEMS, SO IT SEEMS LEGITIMATE THAT THEY SHOULD BE INCLUDED.
SORRY, I SEEM TO HAVE MANAGED TO PUT EVERYTHING INTO CAPS!
bUT i ALSO HAVE A LOT OF NASAL CONGESTION!
INTERESTING THREAD!

Actually my OA typically runs 1.0 or less. I get my numbers from the HI.
My issue is "mostly" Hypop's also.
When I was titrated my AHI was 72 Almost all Hypop's and only 2 OSA for the night!!
I have a weird AHI/Pressure chart. As I raise my pressure my Hypop's go down but my OSA goes UP MY Doc siggests the pressure is triggering Cantrals - talk about being caught between a rock and the hard place...
SO I try to settle in around 1.5 - 2.
I'm still working on it.

As of this post 5/9/06 10am cst 471 views only 36 responded to the poll.
Does that mean that most of us don't know what our AHI is?
OR do we just not want to anonymously contribute to the collective intelligence of the forum?
Very strange, IMHO.

I'll bet that a lot of us don't know what our AHI is, we don't have "smart" machines but we are, at least I am, interested in other's AHI numbers for future reference. I suspect others are not confident in their AHI numbers and others really don't care - they feel fine.
I suspect that it is a pretty small subset of the members on this forum that have all the software tools at their command and are aggressively monitoring their therapy. I also suspect that this subset is among the most vocal on the forum so there is a sense that a lot more folks would be aware of their AHI than really might be.
Just my speculations on the matter.

Nope, it means that many of the same folks click multiple times on this thread. As the thread gets updated we come back again to read the updates. You can be pretty sure though that more than 36 folks have visited this thread. That's members. Multiply that by a arbitrary factor of three for non-members and maybe 100 folks have visited this thread at one time or another.
The most responses to any poll I've seen is a little over 100. The turn-out of 36 is not too shabby.

Bill

Nice numbers. What were you titrated at?
Tom
titrated?

Haven't been titrated yet!! Titration study appointment is May 18
Diagnosed Dec 6/05 Got APAP Jan 17/06 along with software.....and treated myself. Sleep Doc is amazed.
I really don't think I need to go to the appointment but will because it is made and it will confirm that I am doing great.

After performing a careful BOTEC* analysis on this data, I concur with Bill. I have suspected that 30-40 represents the "regulars" here. 42 regulars (i.e. responses to the poll) X 25 replies to the thread X fudge-factor of .5019 (the percentage (fraction) who look at every new post, on average) = 527.
WHOA! ALMOST EXACTLY the number of hits on that thread, as I write!
SB makes a good point, I am surprised at how few people I talk to that also use CPAP/APAP that don't even know what I'm babbling about when I mention AHI. It's alarming. I'm working on that too, one at a time

BOTEC*, LOL That was good.
If you consider how amny just take the equipment home with no real insight on what's happening or how to make it more comfortable - that's why the compliance rate is so low fo rthis therapy.

I know that I visit this thread quite a bit because I am really interested in what people have to say about it. So my visits are probably artificially inflatting the numbers.
I am really stymied on how to bring my hypop numbers down (but I'm working on it).
