Just a general plea to the seasoned users of xpap that not everyone understands what each and every code/acronym means, especially newbies like me.

I know there is a cpap definitions page above, but it only covers a small portion of what is mentioned on here, and when non xpap stuff is thrown in it gets really confusing. It feels a little like being the only person in a room who doesn't speak the same language as the others.

I hear ya'... I love it when people use the word "titration". SLEEP STUDY... that's all you'll hear from me....

Mamma didn't go fer non of them there big words....

I learned there are differences - diagnostic study, titration, split night. It has been helpful when talking to my sleep doctor to know the difference.

Sheriff - Are you sure you didn't have a polysomnography study?

I've always been a big word nerd.
I also don't like using the same noun twice in any paragraph.

I think it is important to try and use the correct words when possible as it reduces the need for extra questions and speeds up the answers.

For example, if somebody says they just had their sleep study, we don't know if they had a split night study, both nights of a separate night study, or just the diagnosis phase. So, then we have to ask if they have had the titration portion yet. Also, sometimes, it is difficult to tell from the explanation if the data being given is from the diagnosis phase or titration phase.

I do realize it is hard to learn all the terminology at first. I was new at this last year. But it is worth it.

I'm curious to know if split studies are done over here in Australia. I also wonder if the lingo is different here too.

split night- combo sleep study and cpap
titration- finding the cpap pressure for an indiviual
MSLT- Multiple Sleep Latency Test (for narcolepcy)
Desat- Oxygen desaturation
UARS- Upper Airway Resperatory Syndrome
RERA- Respiratory Event Related Arousal
EEG- Electro EncephalaGram (brain waves)
sensors- those obnoxious wires and straps and tubes on your person...lol
Hypopnea- shallow breathing with a desat...see above
arousal- 3 second or more awakening in the brain wave (alpha wave)
alpha wave- wake state with eyes closed
ORHD- Obeisity Related Hypoventilation Disorder

Hopefully, one of the members from Australia can help you with the local info. I know some labs here do split studies (I did), but many don't. And those who do have set criteria that you must meet within a certain time period so that there is enough time left to do the titration. Somebody who is mild may take most of the night to get enough data to determine how mild or moderate they are, and if they get severe in REM and/or supine (back sleeping). I never made it to REM stage during my diagnosis phase, but I was severe (ahi 79), so it wouldn't have mattered much if I was even more severe. It was pretty darned clear that I needed cpap. Mine did cost more than what most people have reported. But I slept well, was comfortable, had a great sleep tech who picked the perfect mask for me, and my titration was spot on. So, I'm really pleased with it, and I was glad to get it done all in one night.

Sorry to hear about the ants. We get the little teeny (sugar) ants but we can usually defeat them with the bait traps.

I would love to come to Australia and investigate your countries sleep study program. It's my wife and I's dream vacation.
