Thanks!

I followed the suggestion using a the small file that comes with nail clippers. It took all of 15 seconds and now my system works perfectly.

This video will show you how to remove the cover and access the key pad. I had no success cleaning the contact points on the board. I had also read to file the contact points under the key pad. I tried it and it did not work for me. The I got some electrically conductive paint and my wife applied it using a cut off end of a round tooth pick. She used only a small dab. We let it dry well and that did the trick. We used this on two S8s and it worked for both of them.

Conductive paint is amazing!
No do-it-yourselfer should go without it.

Thinking of adding racing stripes on your Electric Chair? Jim

Maybe fix the heater on your Lilly Pad.

Can someone who has done this fix confirm whether they have had to unscrew the shell of the machine first? I have tried to pry off the on/off switch cover and all I have succeeded in doing is tearing the rubber. It looks as though mine may have a rubber boot over the switch which may be part of a sheet covering all the switches, much like the boot covering the switches in a computer keyboard. I'm a bit concerned that I may have already ruined the switch cover!!!
The neoprene rubber has carbon dots at the ends of the buttons that complete the circuit. That's what needs to be replaced, if you can find the part.
I'm going to try some conductive copper paint -sold in auto or hobby stores, to renew the contact surface.
No need to open the shell.

Accurate Biomed Services has sold me the ResMed Escape S8 keypads for about $20 in the past. 1-800-376-5660 • 1-888-327-7483
They no longer sell the keypads--just talked with them.

I just did a very simple fix for this. The button cover pried off easily with a blunt knife (to avoid damaging the rubber gasket) then the rubber gasket/buttons just lifts out. It looked clean inside but, just to be sure, I dabbed all the button contacts with a cotton bud dipped in nail polish remover (acetone).
Nothing worked so I decided that the black, carbon contacts on the end of the rubber power button must be worn off. (No fault was visible under the magnifying glass}.
Having read the above comments about elecrtrical paint, I wondered if it would go brittle over time and crumble so instead I opted for a dab of adhesive on the power switch knob black points and stuck on circles of silver foil just large enough to cover the points. The ordinary wood glue type adhesive should stay sticky and not dry and if it ever needs to be removed, it just rolls off under finger pressure.
The machine works perfectly now and with this method it can be repaired endlessly.

Fergi posted that 7 years ago... I don't think he/she will see your post.

First, I realize that this discussion is about seven years old, or more when you read this, but these machines seem to last a decade or more, so this issue is current to many people, who just ran into it. Of the four working CPAP units that I, currently, have, two of them are ResMed S8; one Escape, one Compact. Both have the worn out power button issue. It is the button, not the switch that is the problem. As so many of us have found, Fergi's original suggestion may help some, but not all of us. In fact, his post directly fixed my Compact, but did nothing for my Escape. It did, however, lead me to tinkering with the button to see what could be "MacGuevered" into a permanent solution. Since I have the luxury of not caring if I destroy one of these, I pushed the limits of safe practices, to experiment My solution, while crude and, by no means, textbook, has fixed the problem and is not likely to ever return!

I came about my repair, when I was cleaning the inside circuit with an alcohol pad wrapped around forceps. A pencil or tweezers would have been just as effective, but this is what I had near me. I lightly filed the carbon dots, per Fergi's instruction, then tried it out. No dice, this time. Curious about the type of contact circuit used in this application, I figured if carbon dots are required, then some sort of metal is needed to activate the contact. I, then, touched my forceps to the contact, while powered on (DO NOT TRY THIS! I am a highly-trained electrical engineer and self-professed reckless idiot. I did this knowing that I could burn down my house, kill myself and others, and possibly, even, ruin my CPAP!). Since it did, actually, work and operated the button, and since the button is made of think, dense rubber, I tried using a short metal brad out of a thumbtack to complete my repair. I broke off the plastic pushpin and pushed the point of the tiny nail into the center of the carbon pad. This is my crude fix for this annoying issue. If you choose to fix this properly, using safe methods and materials, then I recommend ignoring everything I just wrote and looking up Buttonworx repair kits, instead. As of this writing, they have individual 5mm and 7mm carbon pads with adhesive backs, selling for $0.75, each online, or you can order a kit with several sizes to keep around for fixing TV remotes, rubber keyboards, garage security keypads, and other similar applications, for under $7.

Either way, I hope this information leads you to a quick, simple, and permanent repair of your favorite CPAP unit! I know it has mine.

There is a very easy and inexpensive fix to this problem. Go to Amazon and buy a "CaliKote 44" conductive membrane repair kit for $9.02.
The conductive material on the bottom of the rubber keypad wears out over time. Just dab a bit on each connection point on the bottom of the keypad, let it dry per the repair kit nstructions, and Voila! You now have a keypad that functions as good as new!
(I would also clean the metal connection points that the membrane touches on the CPAP machine with some 91% Isopropyl Alcohol using a Q-Tip).

Here is a link to the product I am describing.

Good luck!

When I take the button out, the button has two tips that are black. Are those carbon?
Then there are 2 printed contacts (appear to be) one with the letters SW1 and one SW1 A
Those do not look as if they could be scraped. I used qtips and alcohol to clean both and the button is a little bit alive, it turns on warming or makes the word warm flicker on the display, but does not start blowing.
I will try the eraser on the black tips, but am somewhat unsure after the long discussion here, what applies to my Resmed Auto S8

Always UNPLUG the machine before working on the innards.
Good luck!
Old thread, but diy repairs will never go out of style.

Hi Everyone,
With respect to S8 keypad not working I tried a different approach.
I googled what kind of keyboard is it!....
I found out that it is called silicone rubber keypad.
This technology is commonly found on TV Remote. It has same type of Carbon contacts in keypad.
After finding it out, I used my old remote for getting Carbon contact & pasted it on S8 keypad's contacts.
Whola! It worked perfectly after it.

Total expenses in INR 10 Rs (for glue).
