Yep, perfectly safe. That card can't hurt you now.

Sorry, should have said "Otter, I had ...."
I would have the problem where "I never eject my card because if i do so, it takes out the entire multi-shot card reader. " on one PC I had. If I "safely removed" the card, the card slot would disappear from "My computer" and it would be gone until I rebooted. I couldn't read another SD card without rebooting. This was a card reader built into the front of the PC. It was internally attached via USB.

Ah, okay, I'll try that next time.
Oddly, I can "safely remove" flash drives without taking out the whole thing.

It happens on the older computer, and not on the newer one. I'm guessing it's some combination of hardware, device drivers, software version, patch levels, configuration settings, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion, Archangle. It never occurred to me that "eject" in Explorer would do anything different than the "safely remove" taskbar widget, but I ejected my SD cards today without taking out the whole card reader.

If something is being written to your card it could be Picasa. I know it used to put a (hidden?) file in each directory when it indexed pictures. And it automatically scanned every drive it saw. I finally realized this and turned it off.
Be sure your PC is set to show hidden files.
