The sky is falling. The sky is falling. Don't hijack this thread into a gun control versus right to carry arms. The topic is NOT about that.

The point that Jim and I are both trying to make is that people who think students are going to overpower a teacher with a "concealed" carry weapon are the ones shouting the "sky is falling". Just why would students attack a teacher just to take their gun? ... assuming they even know their teacher is carrying a gun (concealed means not visible).

The monetary collapse on the other hand is a real threat and it is not a matter of IF but rather a matter of WHEN. Way too many people are way too ignorant of how the world's money system works.

So look into the mirror at your thread topic when you ignorantly respond with "the sky is falling".

One school district in the Dallas-Fort Worth area did a study of the time it takes to get Law enforcement to respond to an event. The result was from the time the suspect set foot on the property, was identified, 911 called, to police arrival was Five and a half minutes. This was a best case study. From this point they asked "What are we going to do in that time to protect the students?" I think that should be the concern of everyone. Another school District allowed guns but required Hostage Negotiation training along with other enhanced training. They also planned for how the police would identify those authorized to have guns in the school during a crisis. As with anything, a knee jerk reaction is seldom the best solution. This is not a problem with an easy solution.

For the same reason a disruptive student tried to attack my broken finger during one of his/her rages when I worked in the special ed field. To cause as much hurt as possible.

And even though the students I worked with had an "MR" label, they were quite smart in many ways and there is no doubt in my mind this student would have eventually known where a gun was if a staff member was carrying it in a concealed manner. Many of them, including this person, were extremely observant.

Anyway, this student had a way of knowing how to cause as much damage as possible when he/she was angry. It was really eery.

No one is suggesting that EVERY teacher is physically, mentally or emotionally equipped to take on a protective role in the classroom (even without a broken finger.) But for those willing and able...

You're missing the point as the situation I described had nothing to so with whether a staff member was prepared to carry a gun. I was pointing out why doing so would have been very dangerous.

It is a tragedy when a child fails to learn compassion; as it is no doubt the very first thing we should teach them.

Hi Chunky,

Actually, I know this is hard to believe but the student did have compassion when he/she wasn't enraged. But if something set this person off such as a change in routine that staff members inadvertently didn't prepare the student for, then all bets were off.

Of course, the school staff wasn't perfect by any means but many times, they had done everything possible to cover all bases to no avail.

I guess for me ... I've always realized that living life is hazardous to your health, crap happens, look at all the security just to fly on a plane and yet driving your car is way more dangerous. The POINT is that there are many and much more dangerous issues facing us than school violence.

As a matter of fact, I work in higher education and have done so for nearly 30 years now. Are you telling me that you do not think that the comment by ems is ignorant and is totaly lacking in common sense?

You were pointing out that a student would TRY to exploit any danger. That is WHY an armed teacher should take extra care. Those who can't/won't should NOT carry anything that could exacerbate the situation. That's part of being trained and prepared.
