Wow, so happy I found this thread. I see it is very old, but I guess some of us have similar issues.

Sleep has been fine, 10+ hours per night is what I needed and what I got. I needed a nap sometimes in the afternoon or after work, and I was able to take one. Four months ago, I started sleeping poorly and waking up after only 7 hours of sleep, and not being able to go back to sleep and not able to nap at all. Then it got worse, many nights I couldn't sleep more than 2 hours.

Had a sleep study, severe obstructive sleep apnea dx, and was prescribed CPAP. Before I could start CPAP, I had thyroid tests done due to fatigue, and they showed hyperthyroid. Started CPAP, and had the thyroid tests redone, now values are normal. But I am still having the same sleep issues, some nights I can't sleep more than 2 hours, and what's worse, I have that closed up feeling in my throat that won't go away.

I am really really hoping that the size of the thyroid might be trailing the test results getting better, but I am wary from what you guys said - that the nerves might be involved. I am also wondering if anyone has been told about viral thyroiditis, and if prednisone or similar could help get the throat issues decreased. Doctors so hate to use steroids, but the only time I slept near normal in the past few months is when I was on a Medrol pack for an unrelated issue (yet that's supposed to keep you up at night, and it didn't for me!).
