We instruct new pts to use distilled water to prevent mineral buildup in the tank but I have had some doctors also add that it helps prevent bacteria from growing.

water differs around the world never mind town to town carrying different bacterias from different sources and is prolly the reason that distilled water is recommended.

After a more closer inspection check and several other professionals looking at my sample it was decided that it wasn't bacteria, but white filter media, I had been using some of the old style white filters with the tabs, I would cut the tab off and after a short time poof..there it was...tks for all the conclusions from my registered forum members and one guest....the reason i'm up this early I have an appointment with my colon dr to get checked out...TKS-FA

In other words, you cut up a good white filter and used parts of it in your machine and that pulled the filter media thru the machine and maybe into your lungs, but you saved a few cents on the correct filter. I hope they don't find any white stuff in todays checkup. Jim

these old style filter had a small tab on them and they would not fit in all the way, so people would cut the tabs off and put a rubber band around the machine to keep the filters in, because if you cough the filters will wind up on the floor...tks=FA

I don't see how cutting off the tab would make the filter material more likely to come out. Is it possible, you put the filter in backwards? The mesh side should be facing the machine.

I cut the tabs off those filters all the time and used them in my PR S1 machines and never had any of the fuzzy stuff end up in the tank. Fuzzy stuff side definitely needs to face outward though.

Both sides are identical on all my filters. ResMed and no-name alike.
Shouldn't they mark them or something?

Would be nice wouldn't it? Like you I can't really tell one side from the other with the ResMed white filters.
It is fairly obvious on the Respironics white filters with the tabs though.
Not quite as obvious on the newer non tabbed white filters for the System One machines but there is a difference.

Obviously you removed the photo and I can't see what you are talking about. I do understand that if you don't wash your humidifier and hose with warm soapy water a few times a week, you may suffer from inhalation of mold and bacteria. Mold is extremely dangerous to our lungs. Just because you can't see the bacteria, it doesn't mean it's not there. It's extremely bad when you can actually see it.

Breathing in mold, especially under pressure can cause just as many health issues as having sleep apnea. Pouring distilled water into a chamber that has bacteria floating in it will almost definitely cause illness eventually. Make sure you clean through the hose with a hose brush, soap and water because just rinsing it with water will do about as much as pouring water over a toilet bowl, there are always those bugs that stick to the sides.
