I spoke briefly to DH about the TV and he said to watch out about the digital audio output. He has a very nice but older non-HD hifi set that we use with the old tv and we understand that the new tvs do not have the RCA audio plugs.

Yes, that is a problem with most new digital TVs. They have digital audio output and our nice stereo sets are analog. I also will face this problem if I buy a new set. Here is a discussion about it - http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2079928

I believe Toslink is the most commonly used standard for digital audio output on today's televisions. Will someone please correct that statement if it is wrong? Anyway, a digital optical to analog RCA converter is relatively inexpensive:

i replaced my old receiver with a new yamaha 5.1 surround sound receiver with hdmi in it. everything including the digital cable box and dvd's go into the surround sound with hdmi plugs. then the surround sound sends the picture to the tv with hdmi and the sound to the speakers. i have four 37 year old kenwood KL777A speakers (16" woofer, 4 way, 6 spkr inside each) and it kicks butt. the system is 500 (5x100) watt and the speakers are 110. it's a perfect match and they sound as good as the day i bought them, maybe better. tell DH to replace the receiver with a new one with hdmi. he'll love it more than he does now. the receiver does have rca connections so you can plug in a regular turntable, cd and dvd with rca plugs.
