Loosely taping some very porous filter material over the vent holes won't impede the air flow at all. All it does is diffuse the blast
Any air pressure will lift the filter away from the holes. You only tape on two sides.
Anyone that uses a machine that shows the total air flow can easily check their logs to confirm this, I think the Respironics does, Resmed doesn't.
I've been using some A/C duct filter for years.
As the others have said though, you must be sensible, blocking the holes would be very dangerous.
