Batteries can't emit fumes without consuming some form of matter. If they emit hydrogen, they consume water. If they emit some other chemical fumes, they will consume the battery over time. If the battery emitted 1/10 ounce of some sort of fumes every day, they would have to consume at least 2 pounds of the material the battery is made out of every year.
There might be some small amount of fumes emitted when the battery is new, but they can't emit a lot of fumes over time without destroying itself.

Wow, 3 nights without charging is impressive. What CPAP machine, and what pressure do you use? With or without humidifier?

If you (or someone you know) can use a few tools, you might find the following Battery Backup Design helpful to create your own battery backup system:

This design puts the battery in a battery box, it keeps things securely fastened, it includes a float charger, and makes the whole arrangement much safer.
