Still waking 2or 3 times a night
I have been using my mask since the end of December 2011. I still do not sleep all night. I do feel rested but would love to sleep the whole night through. Is this normal?
Re: Still waking 2or 3 times a night
How long are you awake at each of the awakenings?
Even normal people---i.e. people without sleep apnea and people without any kind of insomnia---often wake up a few times during the night. Brief wakes at the end of a REM cycle are not uncommon and are not considered abnormal in any way.
So---if the wakes are very brief (5 minutes or so), just do your best to ignore them. Worrying about them has the potential to turn a non-problem into a big problem called sleep maintenance insomnia.
If the wakes are substantially longer than 5 minutes and are creating serious disruption in how you feel and function in the daytime, you'll need to do some investigative work in figuring out why you are waking up. And you'll need to do some behavioral work in figuring out how to teach your mind to not react to briefly waking by coming to FULL ALERTNESS where it's more difficult to get back to sleep.

It could be that you have a prostate problem, if the reason you are waking up is to go to the bathroom. If you are waking up and dont need to pee then you probably need to tell you dr.

Re: Still waking 2or 3 times a night
I have the same problem - 6 months on CPAP and I still haven't slept more than about 3 hours in one go
I wake up at least three times a night, usually just adjust the mask, scratch my nose and go back to sleep. I do feel better than I did pre-CPAP, but not as much as I'd hoped really.
If I take the mask off I sleep all night, so it's not insomnia, prostate, etc that's doing this.
Would love to find a cure, it is gradually getting better though, when I first started I couldn't go more than two hours without waking up.

Re: Still waking 2or 3 times a night
I'm told, by more then just the first reply , that it's normal to wake up after a REM cycle. Try using blackout shades and ear plugs, maybe you can get the 2-3 full wake ups down to 1.
Re: Still waking 2or 3 times a night
FWIW, I didn't sleep through the night for the first 6-9 months, then all of a sudden able to usually sleep 5-6 hrs without waking up. Now I get 8 hrs with one wake-up for bathroom visit [must be my AGE]
I wouldn't be too worried...as long as therapy is working, it takes time to make up for all the years without proper sleep.

I would be elated if I only woke 2 or 3 times a night. A good night is four times, a bad is 14.
