Slinky,

I will gladly take the credit for sending you some of my warm summer weather. Especially since you and Gumby blame me when you get snow. Atlanta is absolutely beautiful with the dogwoods, azaleas, bradford pears, and wisteria in full bloom. My apologies to Nicol for baptizing her with pollen.

Slinky wrote:Asparagus AND fiddleheads?????? Oooooh! I am GREEN w/envy! Do you can or freeze the fiddleheads? We boil them up w/some salt pork and freeze them.
I've never heard of fiddleheads!! I gotta try that. I guess Grandma never would have cut the spring leaves off of a fern. Is there anything particular to look for or any fern?

They call them fiddleheads because they are a fern, the top of the shoot of which in the early spring is coiled like a fiddle or violin head. Once the "fiddle head" opens up and begins to become a fern they tend to be bitter. You want to cut the heads off whilst they are still "fiddles". Like asparagus that encourages them to multiply and grow too.

Fiddleheads are the official vegetable of Quebec.

Here in eastern Nebraska, it has been so mild the brussels sprouts are still alive.
The stupid bradford pears the city planted everywhere are in full bloom,
I hope they freeze and don't leave all those horrid little 'fruits' all over.
Thankfully, our cherry trees are not blooming yet--let the butterflies come out first.
The huge strawberry patch in our yard is greening up nicely--yum!
Tiny little lamb's quarters are springing up--soon we can have some to eat.

I'm off to check for morels in the woods I used to hunt 30+ years ago. I'll keep an eye out for fiddleheads!

And here I was thinking you were referring to the fiddler crab

Look for ostrich ferns, the fiddlehead will be about the size of a dime or nickel, right at the ground, once they uncoil, not so good. Sauté in butter, steam like spinach, eat with morels yum. kathy

No luck today, but we just got some rain, so that's a good thing. Temps are back in the 70's though.
So why do I only have 3 blooms on my Wisteria!!??

I haven't tried fiddleheads but I hear they are pretty good, kind of like asparagus. I may have to buy some.
