I get out as much as I can in the winter, but like Randy said, we don't produce much since only minimal skin is exposed in the winter. My levels have never been determined low, but I still take a small supplement during the core winter months (Dec-Mar up here) - just for maintenance.

I don't know my exact numbers. But my doctor has me on 50000 iu twice per week....it is a prescription version of vit d. My husband and mother in law are also on the same dose. my father takes 50000 iu once per week. I notice a big difference when I don't take it

Hi sleepingbear,
I am going through the exact same thing you are right now at this moment. I have been on CPAP for two years, and with different masks, pressures, no real improvement. I had a physical about 6 months ago, and was diagnosed with pre-diabetes, and low levels of vitamins d and b. My doc had me taking both the d and b orally, as well as metformin twice daily. My aunt, who works for a gastro doctor looked at my blood work and pointed out the low testosterone. I went to see him last Friday about the t levels and he seems to think that my issues are still apnea related, even though both him and my CPAP provider said my AHI and AI numbers were pretty good. He gave me Nuvigil 150, which had no effect and bumped me to 250 and ordered a new sleep study, as I may need a bipap instead of CPAP. I'm really hoping this study will finally solve this problem.

Here is the first of a series of YouTube talks by Neurologist Stasha Gominak re: Vitamin C and sleep apnea. Very interesting!

The thread is about Vit. D, not C... it's a Cpap forum, not about vitamins except as they may relate to Cpap.

I did my own research and started taking D3, slowly increasing it with every quarterly blood test until I got it up to the 70s. It took 18 months to find my right dosage at 15,000 IU/day of D3 packaged with oil to increase absorption, only testing this way helped me arrive at the right amt for me.
That slow 18-month progression is hard to correlate with changes in OSA as I was backsliding into full apnea again from mouth breathing that I didn't know I was doing until I found this site and was educated. I can say that my volatile moods normalized to what they were in previous yrs and I quit crying at the drop of a hat.
I've convinced all my loved ones and friend to get tested; 95% are <30, the new standard for adequate.
Im confused, If the Doctors D3 was bad why did you take it on your own? Was that a typo or what?
FYI - I take D3 on my Dr. advice and he specifically told me not to buy more than a 30 day supply because of a short shelf life.

Vitamin D may also help with Seasonal Affective Disorder ( the winter blues ) . With that
in mind I started taking it about 5 years ago. About 6 months later I had my vitamin D checked
and it was neither high or low. I have continued to take it and haven't noticed it helping my
sleap apnia. But it did help my vision. I am nearsighted and after taking the vitamin D I have
had to have my perscription for glasses changed 3 times always for a weaker perscription !
Now with nearsightnes part of this inprovement can be because I am older but if I skip the
vitamin D for a month my vision gets worse, start back on it and it clears up. Heck of a note
I have had to have glasses to drive for the past 50 years and now if I take my vitamin D I can
pass the driver's vision test.

Interesting Woody.
I am waiting for new eye glasses that have an extremely strong prescription. At the same time, I had been bad about taking vitamin D and at my last physical a few months ago, it was in the high 20s. Recently, I have renewed my efforts and started taking 3000IU per day since that is all I can tolerate per day for now and just barely. But because I have noticed other benefits, I am going to be persistent with this. And your post just gives me more motivation so I thank you for that and am glad it is helping you.

How is 3000 IUs barely tolerable for you?
Have you tried splitting the dose to twice daily (morning and afternoon)? Have you tried sun bathing with early morning/late afternoon sunshine?
Are you getting the most effective dosage by taking your D3 with fats, D3 is fat soluble.

Hi Dreamstalker,
To answer your questions, I felt agitated on the 3000IU dose.
I have been trying the strategy of splitting the dose today to see what happens. Took a vitamin pill with 1000IU of in the am. Just took a 400IU vitamin D pill and depending on how the evening goes, may take another 400IU.
Yup, I took the 3000 IU dose with fats throughout the day. Will continue to do that with a lower dose.
Reluctant to sun bathe due to concern about getting melanoma. Skin cancer runs in my family.
Basically, it is going to be alot of trial and error to optimize my dose while minimizing side effects. I am very sensitive to supplements and have to proceed very carefully.
