I was looking this up because ive been freaking out about it. I had a BAD cold and could not use my cpap without the neti pot. I used my well water, and did not boil it. I've been freaking out for 3 days now.

PS I love your puppy taco. I want one.

If you've ever went water skiing or swimming in a fresh water lake and got water up your nose, you could freak out too. As Ken said earlier, you are statistically more likely to die in a car crash on the way to pick up the distilled water, than you are to die from this.

Not anything you can do now, just don't do it again. Use sterilized, boiled or distilled water PER THE NeilMed instructions moving forward.

-Statistically, probably you won't get sick or die from this.
-Statistically, eventually you will die from something. (if you find a way around this statistic, let the rest of us know )

Thanks. I am starting to feel better. Monday I was flipping out when I read about the woman. I'm also in Northern Illinois, so we don't have warm swampwater near us.

Add salt to your neti pot water. Nuke it and let it cool, though I don't nuke it in my plastic pot. If you use water from your hot water tap it should have been heated to above 113 degrees and killed the bacteria. Scroll up and read the link I posted and you won't worry about it so much.

For the price of distilled water (88 cents a gallon in my area), I will continue to use exclusively distilled water for nasal irrigation and humidifier. I am worth it.

I don't use the Netti Pot, but I do use the 8 oz squeeze bottle (although I use it rather infrequently as needed).
I have always used only distilled water from the beginning.

No point doing anything now. The risk of death from any kind of antibiotics you might take are a lot higher than the risk that you'll get an infection from your past neti use.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to use distilled water or boiled water in the future to reduce the risk of an actual infection, or even hypochondriac worries.

The incubation period is 14 days or less, so you can relax 14 days after the last nastyneti session you had.

There have been something like 4 or 5 Naegleria deaths reported in the entire US in the past year. Assume there are 2 or 3 times as many cases of Naegleria neti deaths that weren't properly detected. That's still not much risk.

You're a lot more likely to die from flu than you are from past neti use. Something like 30,000 people die each year in the US from flu.

Now realize the incubation period is around 14 days. If you netied with bad water 15 days ago, you got away with it. You only have to worry about bad water in the last 14 days or so. The chance of you getting it from your neti use in the last 14 days is even less than the chance you'd get it in a year.

There's not any particularly good or safe treatment. The risks of any drugs you might take are much higher than the risk that you got bad water in the past 14 days and have an infection brewing.

If there was a 100% safe sure fire cure for Naegleria available at the grocery store 5 miles away, you'd probably have more risk of dying in a car accident driving to the store to pick it up than you do from Naegleria from your past use. You're probably a lot more likely to die from stressing about your past neti use than you are from the neti.

My last nastineti was last Sunday. So it's only been 6 days. I've got 8 more to go. Monday I bought distilled water, and boiled it. The problem is, I washed my netipot out with tap water & antibacterial soap. I let it dry completely, but still, the well water gets in there. I'm such a hypochondriac already, this has put me over the edge, anxietywise. I used to love my well water. Now I hate it.

Listen Lily honey, have you ever been to Louisiana? Do you know what the climate and water is like there?

Do you know how much colder and cleaner the well water is in Northern Illinois?
