Thanks, Mars, for trying to wrap this up on a positive note. I hoped this thread would briefly come back to life. I really marvelled at the far left opinions of some on here, bad-mouthing me as well as the free enterprise profit-oriented economic system. My life long activities in the business world would never result in an apology for my beliefs. Did you really think I could ever sincerely apologize and embrace some of the opinions put forth on this topic? People have a right to their beliefs and I fully support and defend their right to voice them, as much as I have the right to call them by what I think is their first name; socialistic, anti-free enterprise leftists.

I really wonder what the problem is here - the original post was simply an observation about people who reject science on irrational grounds. Whether or not you agree with it is up to you, but somewhere along the way things got very nasty and it all went off the rails, showing just how childish and unthinking some posters are...

SMenasco, you made a very nice apology a while back, but you just wrote again seeming to be more concerned about name calling than the original issue or Cpap or anything else that would be constructive to the subject - what a shame!

You are absolutely free to expound on anything you believe in, but why does it always have to come down to that level - why can you not make a rational argument for your ideas instead of getting back into the nonsense the other posters introduced - you're obviously educated, why not explain why you're against science (as I think you are, though it's actually hard to tell from your posts) and why is it that science is polarized politically as being a leftist pursuit instead of appreciating that you can believe in whatever policies you choose, right, left or anything else and still support science? Do you think a biological sample on a slide under a microscope knows or cares whether a Democrat or Republican is looking at it?

The major technique used in science is to systematically eliminate theories that cannot be proven - one variable at a time - to hold up as answers to whatever questions might be on the table - revealing what works and what doesn't - as is done in a thousand laboratories all over the world every day to make sure medicine you take won't kill you and hopefully helps, making sure your car won't kill you and will get you where you want to go, and tracing back known facts in time one by one to arrive at the most up to date explanation for how we all got here... not necessarily the last word that will ever be postulated, but the best we can do with what we know so far.

How is any of that political?

Some of the greatest scientists in the world have also held strong religious beliefs - one doesn't have to exclude the other - and why not embrace that as being a positive?

Even if you 'reject' science... which seems an absurd thing to do given where it's taken us at this stage of our history... can you not do so in a reasonable way instead of sticking labels on people and ideas that add nothing at all to the conversation about it?

Such a waste of brain power... pathetic... I'm glad this is over with.

I too find I can only keep my mouth shut for so long.

Provided what they are doing does not affect me, I don't mind if people want to reject science. I just don't see how they cannot be labelled as hypocrites if they are prepared to trust the scientific method for some issues but not others. Of course their position is completely genuine if they stop: taking medication; using electricity; flying in an aircraft; participating in on-line forums ....

Awww, I hit the back key, my very long post was lost. Ayn Rand, compassionate conservatism, and all. So sad.

Why Do These People Embrace Science?

Green Activists Fall For the Old “Dihydrogen Monoxide” Petition Prank at Cancun Global Warming Summit sign up to ban “dihydrogen monoxide” (DHMO), which is an “evil” chemical found in our lakes, rivers, oceans, and even our food!

Now watch the video from the Cancun climate conference, you’d think some of these folks would be have enough science background (from their work in complex climate issues) to realize what they are signing, but sadly, no.

The attendees were also more than eager to sign a petition to cripple the US economy.

What a bunch of global warming losers. Sad. This is what you are associated with.

Wonder who paid for their trip to Cancun? Sure the taxpayers did. Do any of you pay taxes?

I would like to laugh but these scientific misfits are costing us money and are dangerous.

Imho, this whole climate change thing is a$$ backwards.

When someone introduces something "new" for all of us to "consume" (whether we like it or not) . . .

I do believe that the burden of proof is on them to prove that this new thing is safe, not f*cking vice versa.

Methinks you are much too cautious.

The dangers I am undertaking only fascinate me - no fear. After so many hours inside these fantastic machines, I still feel fascinated when a Boeing 747-400 takes off. We are inside with a temperature of 21°C, breathing oxygen, eating a nice steak and watching a movie. Outside the air passes by with 950Km/h, 11Km over the ground and with an outside temperature of -50°C. We are talking about 360 Tons of high tech equipment moved by 4 engines each one producing 270kN of power. And it simply flies....... 12-13 hours if needed taking us to the other side of the world. A trip you would need 1 month to accomplish, 100 years ago. Notice the tip of the wing and the engines. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMsrfI- ... ture=share You will see the physical forces involved in this take-off, a procedure that happens thousands of times every day but still a miracle of human fantasy.

What you linked to is a highly edited video from a party that has interests that aren't scientific. It holds no value whatsoever. If you want to have an informed non-biased opinion, the only sources you should use are peer-reviewed published scientific literature.

Sorry, I have not watched the video in So Well's link, but please tell me you are being entirely sarcastic.

If not you are creating quite a contradiction by using a van Gogh for an avatar and a name like soul_power.

van Gogh never published a single word of peer-reviewed scientific literature and I am fairly certain he never read a single word of peer-reviewed scientific literature. Therefore based on your logic Starry, Starry Night has no value. If you truly believe this my advice is to stay away from art galleries and art collecting.

Also soul_power is a reference to something that is not established in peer-reviewed scientific literature.

My apologies if your brief statement was meant to be sarcastic. As sarcasm it is brilliant!
