Hi Jeff

My guess is that it's LIKELY harmful IN THE SHORT TERM to have more awakenings (in the form of being tired and cognitively impaired, or like jnk said, accidents) and it's more POTENTIALLY harmful in the LONG TERM to have more desaturations (I'm not sure there's a guarantee of that, especially if they are on the more minor end of the continuum of desaturations). That's a guess.

Both are harmful in the long-term. But oxygen desaturations are more urgent.

Mostly awakenings here, but it made me a complete wreck.
Cpap is my sleeping "pill".

That is a 10 year prison term for resurrecting an old poll. 20 years for the 2nd offense.

We seem to have a resurgence, must have had a rise in unemployment, or maybe socialism has passed 65% now in the U.S.A., used to be highest on the weekends, with people off work, not it seems the national idea is not to ever work. Anyway, thanks to Chunkyfrog prodding I've been restriction my Poll Lock Saming, it seems to have become a 7 day a week thing, instead of just weekends. Anyway, you can't teach Poll Locks anything, and maybe the Feel Good I'm a Good Member factor is helping the lonely Newbee's.

I took up knitting instead, I currently am knitting a hose cover, so far it's 35 foot long no end in sight. Jim

The de-saturation is probably not harmful in and of itself.

The scenario:

PaO2 drops while PaCO2 rises. Your body releases adrenaline in response to the PaCO2. Your blood vessels constrict while your heart rate rises in response to the adrenaline. Your heart muscle goes into lactic acidosis because there is not enough oxygen to support its activity. You either awaken, or come very close to awakening, and everything settles back to normal when you start breathing again ... until it starts all over again.

I think that no one effect of obstructive sleep apnea can be said to be causing the most damage. They all work in concert to make you a very unhealthy person.

I beg to differ. Very severe sleep apnea cause
cellular atrophy. If you've ever seen those people whose apneas cause a oxygen desaturation to 50-60% spo2 their heart stops. They're literally getting extreme issues and can develop to d of issues. You can have 50 AHI's. But if the oxygen desaturation is only to 89-90% nadir. You'll get f*****d up from sleep fragmentation and sleep deprivation. But it won't cause the same comorbid conditions. Long term Hypoxemia can also cause permanent cognitive deficits at the very least.

This isn't to discourage people from getting their sleep apnea treated if they don't have hypoxemia. But scientifically it's a bit less benign to have sleep fragmentation than oxygen desaturation.

Mr. Goofproof -- Socialism has passed 65% - nah. Unemployment - far better than it was in 2008. Someone likes bringing up old polls... so what in the scheme of things. Maybe Poll Locks, Feel Good Members and New Bees will learn something new.
