Is this a little like saying, "she's 13 going on 30"?

It's the half-empty/half-full thing. You may be freaked out and mad.
As for me, I am extremely grateful to have sleep apnea and have to live with a machine. I could have had cancer and have to live with chemo and extreme pain and after all that, still die early. Or I could have had diabetes and have to limit my appetite and poke myself with a pin and insulin every day for the rest of my life. Or I could have something that confines me to a wheelchair and I'd have to be restricted on everything that I do and cannot do. Now those are things that freak me out.
As for 40? I am 52 and I wish I could have been diagnosed in my 40's, because then I could have spent those years feeling great instead of missing out on things and damaging my body because I wasn't breathing or sleeping right at night. I envy you for finding out so many years earlier.
With sleep apnea, I can still live a normal, full life with no restrictions other than having to put a silly mask on for 8 hours of the day. If this is the worst that happens to me in my life, then I am extremely blessed.

Kind of related to this, there was a news article in the last couple of days that was kind of unusual.
It said that the first person who will live to age 150 was (statistically speaking) born recently.
So ... they can get a new machine every 5 years. That's going to drive the insurance companies nuts.

I'm one old codger (85th birthday last month) who has been on XPAP for over 4 years and hope to stay on it for many more. Part of my mental exercise is trying to figure out how to improve my therapy in the absence of informed professionals.

Well said, ameriken!!
I think of my using a CPAP at night as being no more "big deal" than using my K-Mart reading glasses in the day. I'm a CPAP user when I want to breathe during sleep. I'm an eyeglasses user when I want to read a book, a menu, tiny print instructions, cpaptalk on the 'puter, groom a dog, look up a phone number, etc.
Gee, now that I think about it, I probably use glasses more than I do a CPAP, and I use CPAP every single night.
Will happily be using both for the rest of my life, and sincerely wish I could have started
one of them back in my twenties (but it wasn't invented then.)

Your post reminded me that I passed the two year mark in June without even giving it a thought. I used to have some of that same I-have-to-do-this-every-day-for-the-rest-of-my-life freak-out that you describe, but those thoughts faded. I hope it all becomes natural for you after a while.
