I think you are correct to be worried about cleaning the hose. It is less likely to become contaminated if you just leave it alone.

Quite some time ago (maybe two years?), I followed the lead of others here and quit cleaning my hose. If I look into the hose it still looks very clean.

I get a new one every two years, whether it needs one or not. Only filtered room air goes thru it.
