Had a Kindle for about 2 1/2 - 3 years now (actually we have 4 now -- mine, wife's (1 1/2 yr), father-in-law's (1 yr), and sister's(she got re-gifted my 1st one)).

There is a patch to the Kindle OS that will essentially turn it into a Droid tablet at a bargain price. Browser, apps and all. But you didn't hear it from me...

Any idea how well that works? Is it pretty slow? Where would one find that patch?

Actually, the web browser that's included on the latest-generation Kindles isn't too bad. In fact, I sometimes browse this forum using my Kindle. There are a number of websites that make the Kindle web-browsing experience more pleasant. Several that come to mind are
http://www.readingthenet.com/ (Reading the Net), http://www.google.com/gwt/n (Google Mobile), http://m.yahoo.com (Yahoo! Mobile), and http://kinstant.com. I have those sites bookmarked on my Kindle for easy access. If you know how, you can also make a .mobi or .txt "book" with links to frequently visited websites and transfer it to your Kindle via USB cable.

There are some good Kindle map websites too, like http://www.kindlemap.net/ and http://kinstant.com/maps/. Kindlefish is a good translator: http://kindlefish.t15.org/. And check out this website from your Kindle, where you can download their "Book of the Web" to your device which has lots of interesting links!: http://www.readingthenet.com/bookoftheweb.

I have one more Kindle resource to share.... This website is, by far, the best source of Kindle tips and tricks that I have found: http://blog.diannegorman.net/2010/09/ki ... uts-et-al/. If you visit that website from your Kindle, you can even download the tips onto your device. It is amazing what you can do with your Kindle!

If I remember the games won't run on the other Kindle Apps for the computer or phones. If you just want to read a book on your phone or computer they work OK. The e-ink sure works better and the battery life is almost worth it.

My son did his. (The one we got him for his birthday...) That's where I heard about it. I haven't actually seen it/played with it. They will be here Monday and I'll get a full report and demonstration.

If it's like what my son did with his iPod, it's called "jail-breaking". My son did his in order to use something other than iTunes to manage his music/apps. I think it is basically changing the operating system of the device. He was thrilled with it, but I never really saw much difference.

You must really have a LOT of patience!
I couldn't imagine using the Kindle for that. Too much of a bother. In an internet emergency (if indeed there is such a thing), I'd much prefer using my iphone, or similar device. Easier to navigate and unlike the Kindle, it's in color.
But regardless, as most have stated, the Kindle is a wonderful gadget!

I regard to the posts about "jail-breaking" an iPod device, I AM NOT making any judgment whatsover in this regard, but it is illegal, and I don't know what Apple could do if they found out. They might could disable the iPod if ever hooked up to iTunes.
My Grandson and his friends have done this to avoid paying charges for "buying" songs and videos. In at least one instance, his friend's iPod was PERMANENTLY disabled, IOW, rendered "junk".

I often wondered about the legality of "jail breaking". It just struck me as wrong. I'm not surprised.

My main concern in bringing it up is that I'd hate to see someone's iPod become disabled, as they aren't exactly inexpensive. And unless I'm mistaken, I think Apple maintains the right to do so in their terms of use agreement.

That MAY be what he's talking about...don't know yet.
