Bill.......

A couple of years ago, my doctor convinced me to take Antara for high triglycerides. It worked like a charm for over a year....my levels were reduced to normal.....and I was pleased.

But after about a year, my left hand wouldn't work correctly...I had a lot of pain when I tried to use it.....and I was diagnosed with "tenosynovitis" (not sure of the spelling) which is "inflamation of the sheath that encloses tendons. Also, at about the same time, I'd hurt a lot when I got up from my desk...my achilles tendons were very painful.

I suspected Antara......checked it out on the Internet...and found that I was dead-on correct. That s--t was killing me slowly!

I stopped taking Antara and spent about 6-months getting over the side effects.

Moral of the story: Be VERY suspicious of "great new drugs" that are "wonderful" and that "do such a fine job". The drug reps are paying off the doctors to prescribe their high profit products.

In your case, you might try cutting back on your high glycemic foods....and I suspect that you'll see a nice reduction in your triglycerides.

As a disclaimer, in no way am I laughing at your medical matters. But I had to chuckle at your terminology. I expected you to look about my age. Been a while since I heard that one.

I've been around a while. I'll be 55 this august.

The doctor requested I have my testosterone checked with a simple blood test. My testosterone was low so he started me on Adro Gel Pump. This medication is like a lotion (looks and smells like hand sanitizer) you rub on your skin every morning and it is absorbed into the skin within about 5 minutes. Just be careful were you apply this medication, you cannot apply it to your genital area or you can have a risk of testicular cancer. You can apply this to your upper back, upper arms, stomach, or thighs. You can search the internet for this medication.

My triglycerides are 130 to 135 now and my sugar is 78. I had to cut back the medicine dose twice now but my testosterone is at a normal level. I now have more energy.

Hope this helps!
My doc put me on Andro Gel and within 6 weeks my testosterone level dropped nearly 150 points. Now I'm on testosterone injections for about 10 weeks and the level is still 100 points lower than it was when I strarted.

Hey good news
I did well on the glucose tolerance test this morning.
8:00am fasting 9 hours blood sugar 98. Chug orange flavored drink containing 75g of sugar in less than 5 minutes
8:30am blood sugar 184
9:00am blood sugar 191
10:00am blood sugar 105
So, I am still taking the fact that my doctor had me do this, as a wake up call. I'll be walking more every day, adding fruits to my vegetables and eating what carbs I consume mostly for their fiber (raw oatmeal, milk, and fruit) for breakfast.

Mr Bill wrote:Yikes, I was just having my first visit with my primary physician since I got sent off for my first sleep study. So, I got blood work done at the local health fair. Really good numbers except... triglycerides were around 290 despite over 12 hours fasting. Blood sugar was fine as usual at 85. Triglycerides in the past have been ~150. So, my doctor has scheduled me for a glucose stress test because he says persistent high triglycerides 'may mean your body wants to become diabetic'! A number of explicative superlatives are coming to mind right now.
Mr. Bill. Have you tried taking double strength Fish Oil? It is a food supplement that you can get at your local drug store or health food store. It lowered my triglycerides by about 30 - 40 %. My wife's levels were near 300. After taking the Fish Oil it dropped her level below 200.

Give it a try. It is an inexpensive way to lower triglycerides.

Costco sells both the regular fish oil and the more refined version, cheap. I do not get any gastro side effects with the more refined version, and it contains a lot more of the active ingredients.

wiki on insulin resistance wrote: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin_resistance

Fructose is metabolized by the liver into triglycerides, and, as mentioned above, tends to raise their levels in the blood stream. Therefore, it may contribute to insulin resistance through the same mechanisms as the dietary fat. Just like fat, high levels of fructose and/or sucrose induce insulin resistance in rats,[26][27] and, just like with fat, this insulin resistance is ameliorated by fish oil supplementation.

several studies conclude that high uric acid level apart from other contributing factors by itself may be a significant cause of insulin resistance.
That bit about the high uric acid level jumped out at me. Reminds me of the gout sleep apnea link.

OK, I am going to try that fish oil.

I'm a little late to the party, but you might check this guy's story. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/the-book ... stories-5/ Scroll down just past the half way mark and read the story of the burly guy with the red beard. It's pretty inspiring. He went from diabetic to non-diabetic just by changing his eating habits and losing weight.

Exercise, lower carbs and more MUFA (monu-unsaturated-fatty-acids) will help lower your Trigs.

I AM diabetic and since going low-carb and eating more eggs, meat and MUFA, my Trigs have been great.

Just remember that diabetes is genetic, so IF that's what your high Trigs are warning you about, you CAN heed the warning and POSTPONE developing D., but it may eventually catch up with you as it's a progressive disease (again IF this is what the high Trigs are warning you about).

You can not stop getting diabetes, nor can you cure it - no matter how much weight you lose, or how hard you work to get your lab results in 'normal' ranges. It's not a disease you give yourself - there are many more overweight people who don't exercise and eat badly with high Triglycerides who will never have diabetes.

I too, used to have very high uric acid (long before T2 D.) and I managed this with eliminating certain foods (potatoes, peppers, raw tomatoes, pineapple, eggplant).

Cheers,
xena

I have had high triglycerides my entire life. Nothing brought them down into the normal range. I went to the Mayo Clinic last Spring and the Doc put me on 4 grams of Lovaza (prescription high concentrate purified fish oil) My triglycerides have been in the normal range ever since.

I too, take Lovaza, which is a fish oil capsule on steroids (with a price to match). My cardio insists Lovaza has some 'extra' goodies in it, so as long as I have coupons to get it from my pharmacy cheaper than regulare fish oil pills, I'll gladly keep taking it..

Does anyone remember the website of "statin doubters"--it includes as members the general public as well various experts and medical professionals?

I could only find this http://thehealthyskeptic.org/the-truth- ... atin-drugs and this http://www.ukskeptics.com/forum/showthr ... of-statins and while interesting, they are not what I'm thinking of.

Mr. Bill,
Have your doc do at least a thyroid panel. High TSH (low T4) over several weeks can boost you triglycerides to very high levels. You may not even feel any symptoms of hypothyroidism yet have a boost in triglycerides. This would be my first guess if your
HDL was within normal limits, and your total cholesterol was not way out of bounds.

No need, I am hypothyroid (Hashimoto's thyroiditis). Originally confirmed by presence of antibodies, a T4 of 1.2, and a TSH of 700. I take 150mcg/day of levothyroxine. I had heard it messes with your triglycerides and chloresterol but my TSH is sailing right along with a TSH of around 1.

T4 is low, should be 4-12. TSH, although in normal range, is on the lower end of normal. Are you seeing an endocrinologist? Might be a good idea with the incidence of Hashimoto's. Pretty high correlation with diabetes.
