well, then, how about this one?

Most furnaces aren't using liquid fuel, and aren't prone to backfiring into the intake, and if they do that small amount of medal won't help.

of course, the whole point of my post was that the reinforcing material goes towards the blower, to keep the filter material from being sucked in...

For most of the filters I've seen, it probably doesn't matter that much.

It appears the "right side" is "the side that is less likely to shed fibers into the machine." Some of the filters have an obvious plastic mesh on the side that face the machine. I've seen some filters that seem to have some sort of plastic spray on one side that locks the fibers on that side. That side would seem to be the one to go toward the machine, but it's DARN hard to see. They really need to mark the correct side with "this side toward machine."

I think some of the newer genuine filters and many of the counterfeit filters don't have an obvious "less fuzzy" side. I think the ambidextrous genuine filters are designed not to shed out of either side. The counterfeit filters may be a different story.

When I take it out of the sealed bag & look at it, I think I see a side that should face into the S9. But, by the time I get to the S9 & having looked at it several times on the way, the other side looks like it should face into the S9.

So, I just assume it does not matter, and put it in whichever way it is facing by the time I get to the S9. Scientific it ain't, but it causes less stress that way.

because of the superior design of the resmed filter holder, their filters don't need a reinforcing mesh, they've got all those little posts to help hold it up. so they don't have a front and back side

they're also pretty much curious kitten proof, unlike the respironics.

The original question was about PRS1 filters. I think the S9 filters don't matter which side faces the machine.
