You are going to have a transition between breathing while awake and breathing while asleep, no matter what you do. I would not worry about what happens during those periods.

I appreciate that. It's not that I'm worried, and it's not that I'm trying to bring my AHI down to some fabulous number. It's that I'm uncomfortable when the centrals happen. (1) The machine starts shooting the pressure pulses (the little red ticks) at me, and (2) my heart starts racing, and then (3) it's harder to fall asleep. I have been told that raising CPAP pressure will increase centrals in some people. Since I seem to be prone to centrals while falling asleep, I'm experimenting with a theory that ramping my pressure might help reduce the number of centrals I experience while falling asleep. The experiment got off to a slow start when I was misunderstanding the relationship between the ramp button and the auto-on button.

In a roundabout way I found some information about CPAP-emergent central apnea: http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/304967-overview Generally transitory, persistent in 1.5% of patients.
