What about mustaches? Where are the threads about how to tape over mustaches?

Taping your mouth risks suffocation or other problems if the machine quits blowing and you don't wake up while wearing a nasal mask. You will be rebreathing your own exhaled air. Oxygen will decrease and CO2 will increase. This can cause you to sink deeper into unconsciousness and stop breathing. This is why all full face masks to have an anti-asphyxia valve.

Most people will wake up and be able to take the mask or tape off, but it's not a sure thing.

There is a risk of aspiration pneumonia if you vomit before you can get the tape off. Aspiration pneumonia is very bad. Google it.

Many people tape anyway despite the risks and have no problems. The risk may be small, but you'll probably be doing this for the rest of your life so risks add up.

Before we can advise you, we need to get your facial hair categorized.

Is "None of the above" an acceptable category?

I will try to find a similar drawing or snap on the web and report back.

In the meantime, let's just say it's a brush mustache and a light beard, and pulling tape off of it makes me want to cry.

Hi Tamra,

I use paper medical tape. I had some problems at first because I slobbered and got the 3M painter's tape wet, so it didn't stay adhering. However, I got the paper tape and soon had no slobering issues. I think the body just adapts. I like the paper because it is so easy to get off, it's light and if I have to cough it isn't a problem.

I'm glad someone re started this blog - I was just considering taping for the first time. Full face masks because of their size leak more and although I've been on one for years I much prefer the resmed nasal mask. So much more comfortable. No chin strap has ever worked for me. So glad this is up here with warnings and all. Helps me consider the pros and cons.

I've never had a problem the 1 or 2 times the machine stopped and my mouth was taped...still live and kicking

I have a copy of my hubby's mug (from his citizenship papers--ca. 1976) on my cubicle wall.
--looks a bit like the "stay away from that guy" pic, but with a wide collar polyester leisure suit.
I call it his "porn star look"

-Just one last thought as I already posted on using the paper, Johnson's medical tape. It is light, not irritating and easily removed. It really barely seals, but it is ironically enough. Sometimes I have found it unsealed at the bottom, but somehow it still works...I think just having something across your mouth causes you to keep it closed better. Anyway, I really think if I was going to throw up I could get it off in a jiffy....just in case it is a worry...

No chin straps, etc. ever worked for me. I have been using 3M Micropore tape to tape my mouth for 7 years with no problems. I know it sounds weird, but that's the only thing that cures my mouth breathing. As long as I have a good fitting mask w/ no leaks, all is well!

I am a mouth breather and the only thing that works for me is nasal mask and taping my mouth. I have taken an anti-asphyxiation valve from a full face mask and taped it to my nasal mask as an extension to prevent the chance of suffocation in case the power or CPAP goes down, just as an extra precaution.

Just my two cents here...I am allergic to many things, thru experimentation I am able to use a cloth nasal mask but not a full, cant tolerate neoprene chin strap. I use a paper tape that curiously is the only tape I can tolerate. As for mouth tape, its a 1 inch vertical, lips are greased with coconut oil, top lip attached to bottom lip. 10 yrs ago I had major dental orthognathic surgery to align my jaws they surgically break them on purpose, after 2 yrs of braces. After surgery they install sharp hooks on the braces and wite twist top teeth to bottoms, it is stressful and causes bruising and swelling from top of head to my belly. It was horrible. They also have me a latex feeding tube which caused amaphalactic shock,throat to swell up, almost died..My one and only ambulance ride, oh yes..my head felt like it would explode, I couldnt let anything touch it, nor lay down. A liquid diet for 12 weeks. Im handling my one little center piece of tape now with my cpap just fine. Just be careful and dont seal your whole lips together, just to keep jaw from slacking.

I also tape my mouth closed. No issues so far, though this thread does make me a little nervous. FFMs dry out my mouth--mouth opens, air goes in, mouth dries out. Not sure how this doesn't happen to every 'mouth breather' with FFM.

because some close their mouths at times and get the spit moving around before opening up to start drying out again.
