Hi All

I think that one continuing thread on the same subject would be far more useful than countless threads all over the place.

I also think it would also save some newcomers from asking the same questions over and over again, and others having to give the same reply over and over again.

I think the advantages of the present system far outweigh the perceived disadvantages.

(And just because I "think" this does not necessarily mean that I "am", or the opposite for that matter )

I've learned unexpected things from old threads that suddenly pop up. It' a bit fun.
I may have even contributed to an old thread without paying attention to its age.
I rarely go back more than a half dozen pages.
I don't always know what I'm looking for, but I always find something.

I bring up old threads myself when it is needed. Most of our newbies don't know how to search for things - they need help often.

As a relatively new forum reader (3 mo. or so but signed up forever ago) I have to agree with what you said.

Most lists have/had an archive function where threads more then a year or so old are stored differently. This actually was created to save money as the archived threads are stored with less detail since they can't be written to anymore and needed less space and time to do searches and update the the active threads is faster. Space has become so cheap ans servers so fast that this isn't much of an issue anymore.

I have mixed feeling on locking old threads, sometimes there is indeed new information that should be added to an older thread so in this case they should remain open.

The biggest feature I would like to see if the ability to flag threads I want to follow as sometimes it is not easy to go back after a few days and find the threads amongst all the new ones. Yes, I can view my posts and go directly that way but then I lose the details on how many times the thread was viewed and who/what time it was commented on.

At the very bottom of the page in any thread you open, you have - within the light blue background - an option called "subscribe". If you "subscribe" to a thread you can find it in your User Control Panel under "managing subscriptions".

Your are automatically "subscribed' if you reply, but you can subscribe to any thread you want - without replying.

Thanks, now I just need to remember to subscribe before I leave a thread. I usually wind up remembering what I want to follow when I next log-in and wonder what's new in that thread I read last night, forgetting the title of the particular thread.

Took a look at that in my Control Panel just now.

Maybe that's because in "Board Preferences - Edit posting defaults" I've deliberately always kept this marked "No:"
Notify me upon replies by default

I love the idea of a warning that a thread has been inactive for x amount of time. As a relative newbie, I've dived in and responded to a thread then realised I'm prolly yapping at myself cuz the last post was forever ago.

That being said, again as a newbie, some of these older threads have answered a lot of my questions.
