As others have mentioned, you don't have to own a kindle to read books, you can use the amazon reader app available for computers

Just a quick-follow. What I described above are perfectly legitimate ways to download and/or read books which are free from amazon. In fact, at amazon.com/kindle, there is an entire section devoted to free books.

OT, if you're into sci-fi, baen.com is an excellent source for free e-Books [again all legitimate free downloads].

The forums at Amazon are indeed very helpful. And there are many web sites that do offer free e-books legally, where the copyright owner has given permission or the books are out-of-copyright and, therefore, legal to distribute.

I didn't think you were addressing my post per se and just wanted to make sure others didn't feel uncomfortable using all the tools available via amazon.com to get free books. In fact, since I bought my kindle3 back in Sept, I've paid for only 2 books and all the others have been freebies....

Me too! And I obtained most of those free books from Amazon.com. I posted several Amazon search links earlier in this thread, to help people find all the free books at Amazon, not just the ones currently offered by Kaplan. I've found both "classics" and limited-time free contemporary books there that look interesting. So many books....so little time!

Kaplan has extended the offer to Jan 17th.
They have a lot more ebooks (health/educational) listed for free.
I'm going to see if I can get into kindle with a kindle gift card instead of a permanent credit card--anybody try that?
