The only time I hear the exhaust air make noise is when it blows against my pillow or sheets. If it blows out into the open it's quieter than the S9 'shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh' right next to my side of the bed.

Man, you're good! Is IT your profession, or just an overly serious hobby?

This is my experience too, but it can depend also on the mask type and whether the vent has any drops of humidity/moisture causing blockage, and whether mask torque is causing large leaks near your eyes or around your mouth. I hear the machine more than the mask, but I have to really concentrate to hear the machine.

JBenenson and others: Medicare does NOT ALLOW any DME provider to "upcharge" for a more sophisticated CPAP. The entry-level, bare-bone CPAPs that most local DME suppliers prefer to pawn off on unsuspecting newbies are the EXACT SAME HCPCS (insurance) code as the fully data capable CPAPs and APAPs. There is a cost difference to the local DME supplier when buying them for resale which is why they prefer to pawn off the entry level CPAPs but Medicare and most insurances DO NOT pay by brand and model. They pay by HCPCS code which is e0601 for an entry-level CPAP, a fully data capable CPAP or a fully data capable APAP. Pacific Pulmonary wasn't doing you any great favor, they were just complying w/Medicare regulations and your preference and/or insistence on the PAP you got.

Just got my S9 Autoset 10 days ago. It is so much more quiet that my Respironics M-series Auto with C-Flex. My wife commented on that without me even mentioning it. The ability to see the flow waveform for every breath in the detailed data (Rescan V3.12) is heaven for an engineer type like me. I thought I had set my pressure range and EPR just perfectly but the Autoset has allowed me to tweek them even more with the inclusion of both the central and obstructive apnea information.

I have only one small complaint. I get a small whine from the machine during the exhalation phase. As others have mentioned the noise is not transmitted up the Climateline hose. It is annoying, but not enough to keep me from falling asleep within a few minutes. Anyone else have this noise with their S9?

My exhales cause a bit of whine, too. I'm generally too tired to let it affect me. Although... my "whine" sounds like it's coming from the S9 body.

I will find out on Monday night when I will have mine!

My old Remstar Auto whines with inhalation and exhalation. It never used to, but as it is now 5 years old and is well traveled, I suspect the bearings are starting to wear down a bit.

Hello all,

I also have a new S9 Autoset and it does whine. My sleep doc has had the same problem with other patients. She said it must be a bad batch as some of them do not make the noise. I have tried another and the whine was barely perceptible.

I called Resmed and they said to have my DME sent my unit in for inspection (its brand new). However my DME said Resmed was sending a new unit and when it arrived it was used smelly and beat up.

May I suggest that we all record the sounds being made by our S9's and compare them, then even approach Resmed and have them either fix or give us new machines.

I love the unit except for the exhalation whine and Resmed dropping the ball.

RESMED YOU GOT A PROBLEMO!

Please Fix!

I just posted my review of my first night with my S9 Auto.

I have no noise! No whine, nothing! Maybe there is a bad batch?

Need help.
I will order one machine from following two model machine. Could you recommend which is better?

Resmed S9 AutoSet CPAP and H5i Humidifier
http://www.respshop.com/cpap-machines-a ... -p-90.html

ResMed S9 Elite with H5i Humidifier

The Resmed S9 AutoSet is the "better" device simply because it is an auto titrating device and can be used as a straight CPAP or as an auto titrating device.

The Resmed S9 Elite is an excellent device but it is a straight CPAP.

Both are fully data capable and provide easy access to that data via the well-lit LCD screen. Most insurances pay for CPAP by HCPCS (insurance) code rather than by brand and model and both the Elite and the AutoSet are classified as HCPCS code e0601.

The S9 Auto like Slinky said is auto titrating (APAP mode), meaning that the unit will adjust pressures in response to obstructive apneas (airway has collapsed) and other events. The S9 can detect central apneas (airway open but no breathing occurs) and it treats it by maintaining the same pressure at detection.

Or if your doctor has prescribed constant pressure (CPAP mode) it can be set to deliver one constant air pressure.

I was lucky in that the prescription I got the doctor wrote "CPAP/APAP with mask and humidifier" and that allowed me to get the S9 Auto with humidifier!

I would choose the S9 Auto! I hope this helps.

My machine has no whine.

I noted from a previoius posting that the S9 machines are made in different countries. So I was wondering if maybe the machines that have this issue were made in a particulare country during a particular time frame ( i.e. manufacturing date). The label on the back of my S9 shows manufacturing date and country of manufacture.

My husband's s9 has no whine at all- simply peaceful, quiet treatment. My s8 is also as quiet as could be. I am sure that they both create a little bit of white noise in the background but neither one of us are annoid by that. The only thing is that sometimes John turns over toward me in his sleep and then his vent is blow strait at my face or my ear and so I have to lift my sheet over my head on that side to block him. However, I much PREFER this to his loud snoring that he had BEFORE cpap!

In any case, we are both VERY happy with our machines. He uses the climateline hose and since I have an s8 I use an Aussie heated hose Nov through March. April through October I use a fleece hose cover from http://www.padacheek.com.

I think that there must have been a bad batch of whiney s9s!

Regards to all,

Jersey Girl
