No panty crises or southern exposure here, just some things the stories above brought to mind.

One time the tech came in to disconnect me for a potty trip and asked, "What was that you were doing with your hands?" Imagine my relief when he went on to imitate my hands held up in in the air with one cupped, the other moving. Was glad to explain to him that my palms itch intensely at night, and I have to scratch quite fiercely.

One study was to assess my limb movements (PLMD) while on successful CPAP treatment. My data was consistently good, so I was to sleep all night at my usual pressure with my comfortably familiar mask, so as to imitate as nearly as possible my sleep at home. As I prepared to get in the bed, the tech kept chuckling and called in the other tech to view my deconstructed headrest, resplendent with one strap being the leg of a pair of tights, the other a flourescent green stretchy headband. I think I broke the monotony of their night.

At one study when my legs were particularly active, in the morning the tech asked me if I was a dancer. When I replied that I was not, he said, "Well, you certainly danced the night away." Having seen video of my nighttime activity, I can only describe it as strangely resembling breakdancing. At least I'm entertaining to the night shift.

I read the panties story to my hubby-(he's scheduled for titration the 22nd)
He asks me,"Are you trying to talk me out of this?"

I guess if that never happens, it indicates centrals.
O.K., guys; not necessarily a 'little' soldier!
They really do that? That is fascinating.
One more reason I am happy I am a woman.

Happens to women, too. this from Wikipedia:

Erections of the penis (nocturnal penile tumescence or NPT) normally accompany REM sleep. If a male has erectile dysfunction (ED) while awake, but has NPT episodes during REM, it would suggest that the ED is from a psychological rather than a physiological cause. In females, erection of the clitoris (nocturnal clitoral tumescence or NCT) causes enlargement, with accompanying vaginal blood flow and transudation (i.e. lubrication). During a normal night of sleep the penis and clitoris may be erect for a total time of from one hour to as long as three and a half hours during REM. Research urologists have found that the increased blood flow during NPT and NCT episodes may prevent excessive collagen from forming in the erectile tissues (sinusoids) of the clitoris and penis.

I've seen all kinds of theories about why we need REM. I've never seen one that explains that!

Elena, that was hysterical! It's hard to sleep when you're rooting through secretary desks and trying to hatch a plan for hiding your underwear!

P.S. Why not wear the comfy underwear during the day? Why suffer all day?!

On the other topic...I do NOT believe that they put a sensor to see if men are having erections in order to indirectly determine whether REM is occurring! Wouldn't the eye sensors and EEG info be enough?!

It's only done in research studies, especially for sexual dysfunction.

But all that genital blood flow wasted on people while they are paralyzed--it's just sad somehow.

OK, so I have to tell my joke from my college neuroanatomy class.

Prof comes in one day, slams his book on the lectern and asks "What part of the body gets 7 times larger during excitement?"

Nobody raises their hand, but one very straight-laced female student in the front row turns bright red and starts squirming in her seat.

Fixing her with a big stare, the prof asks "well, what is it?"

The girl stammers and gets even more embarrassed. She cannot answer.

The professor looks at her and says "I'll tell you this, young lady. It's the Iris of the eye, and somebody did not read last night's assignment!"
