Yes, please keep the discussion open. Many will benefit from it.
I've been using a setting of x1 the whole time I've had the machine because I use a Comfort Gel Nasal mask, but I find all of this interesting.
I always just assumed it was compensating for various leak rates to give you an accurate pressure.

FWIW, I spoke to a rep at Respironics and they told me that the resistance setting for the EasyLife nasal mask is 1x. This mask came out after the PR1 so it is not on the chart.

I tried it at 0 for 2 nights and THOUGHT it was affecting my data but that's really not enough of a sampling to go by anyway and the "experts" last night say it does not affect data.
I should clarify... When I say it shouldn't affect data output, I meant it does not compensate vent rates for leak calculations (like the S9 does). While it does not affect event reporting or leak rates, it could affect your quality of sleep in a very real way. It could be that you are not sleeping as well because you are not as comfortable with it turned off and will possibly affect your quality of sleep in that way.
Note - The S9, with the correct mask selected, will show a leak rate of 0.0. A PR System One will NEVER show a leak of 0.0. The PR shows all air that is not inhaled, regardless of the vent loss, in L/min. You must look at the literature that came with your mask to find the common vent rate at your pressure (usually shown as a line graph). This vented air shows as leak. The PR uses a different method to determine a leak (large change in flow, etc).
In other words, turning it off will not have any direct impact on reporting; your reporting should be accurate with it off or on. Any changes are real, not altered by having Resistance Control turned on, but possibly affected by how you sleep with it turned on.
The link I posted above shows how the wave form is exaggerated to compensate for vent rates... Not sure if it does ANYTHING if you're not using AFlex or CFlex because there shouldn't be a wave (pressure should be constant).
I had it set at X2 the last 2 nights, given that I am using a Swift FX nasal pillows mask with medium pillows and the Respironics Optilife (Respironics pillows mask - X2 for medium) should be at least similar. I
My mistake... I was suggesting X3 because I thought you were using Smalls, not Mediums.
FWIW, I spoke to a rep at Respironics and they told me that the resistance setting for the EasyLife nasal mask is 1x. This mask came out after the PR1 so it is not on the chart.
Thanks for the info. This keeps with what I had believed that everything but nasal pillows should use X1. They say they will be printing the Resistance Control settins on their new masks, but I haven't seen it yet. Not using a PR mask anymore, so I don't know if I will see it when they start.
I may try turning it off again and leave it for a week maybe. I am reluctant to play with the A-Flex since I really got comfortable with it set at 1 when I was using my M Series auto. I'm not sure, of course, whether A-Flex on the M Series and A-Flex on the System One are quite the same.
According to PR, the AFlex algorithm has not changed, and should work the same way it did on the M.
For the next week I'm going to run without Resistance Control, AFlex set at 1. If it doesn't have a negative impact on the way I feel throughout the day OR on my data output, I will leave it that way. Will report throughout the week, and will post some EncoreViewer data if anyone is interested.

I'd be interested in your experiment and I'll be doing mine as well.
It looks like we will both have Resistance Control off and A-Flex at 1 for a week. The only difference will be our pressure settings but we are both using an auto range so our results should be similar.
I'll keep it that way for the week unless I notice anything negative in how I feel during the day or in my data - same as you. The data posting will be helpful. I will post some Page 4s of data as well, from Encore Viewer.
It should be interesting, given that the only difference is our pressure range and settings.

it isn't quite true that the Pr1 will never report a leak rate of 0. I am not familiar with Encore Viewer, but Encore Pro 2.2 gives one the choice of reporting all leaks or only unintentional leaks. I use unintentional leaks and I do get leaks = to 0 sometimes.

That may be... I haven't had the chance to play with EncorePro yet... I'd love to work with it some because I know it does have some reports that aren't available in Viewer. I spent $100 on Viewer, and it's not much more than a PDF generator... kinda disappointing and VERY overpriced...

I want to bump this thread up and see if anyone has anything new to add. I use Resmed masks and would like to know what to set this resistance control at.

Its more related to the dead space.
Compare the published leak rates of the masks with the SO resistance settings. It does not correlate:
(I cant post a link, but just google RESPIRONICS LEAK RATE MASK and you'll get your results!)
(Resistance settings picture is in P1 of this thread).
You will see the 2 dont match, as I said, now check the mask volume, these DO match, what made me suspect this at first was all full face were X1, then I confirmed that it relates to internal volume of mask.
So to get the SO R settings for your non PRSO mask, you need to know the volume of your mask, then compare this with the published volumes of the PR masks, and find one that matches, then find that mask on the PR resistance settings chart.

Apparently I am way behind the times, because I was just researching this today and the "outdated" response was the only thing I've found so far that was of any help whatsoever. Thank you.

It's only a marketing scheme by Philips to make the user think he better use only Philips masks with the Philips machine. If you use a straight CPAP, there is a tiny change in pressure from the choice of resistance control setting. If you use an APAP, there is no difference.

What should one do if they use a PR system one but a non-PR mask?
I have p10 pillows .. should I set resistance to 4 as indicated on the previous page's diagram for small pillows .. or just turn the resistance setting off completely?

You should just set it to 0 which turns the Resistance Control feature off when using a non Respironics/Phillips mask.
Though I will share this...I have a Respironics machine and I did experiment with with my P10 nasal pillow mask using all the settings for Resistance Control along with turning it off and I could tell any difference with anything. Didn't feel any different and didn't notice anything different in the software reports.

Not all of us, including me have even been on CPap machines for 10 years. They got you early. But if somebody asks a question or requests help from the "knowledge" you all have posted, you should answer them. Nobody is trying to resurrect the dead, we are only looking for answers to questions we thought you "experts" would have memorized. You are no different than the new users, you have just been kept in the dark so long you don't have enough sense to even act like a decent human being. EVERY single person I have ever talked to on this site has been rude and obnoxious. It finally occurred to me it's because they don't know what the hell they are talking about. Why don't you just sit down and shut up.

You are responding to a six year old post responding to a 10 year old thread.
Don't you have anything better to do?
