The statistic reflects an annual risk. What the study is saying is take a large group of people with untreated sleep apnea and a second large group without sleep apnea. The groups should be adjusted to the same age distribution and gender distribution. Over the next twelve months, the probability is that three times the number of people in the apnea group will die (or have a stroke) as compared to the number of people in the non-apnea group.
Or take two 69-year old males, say Regis and a dude who doesn't have sleep apnea. Regis is three times more likely to die in the next year. You are happy now I am sure.
BTW, scholars believe asphyxiation was the cause of death in most crucifixions as the victim eventually slumped at the knees and the chest muscles were stretched to the point that exhaling was not possible. Apnex would have been ineffective in these cases.
