In fact, my CPAP;s motherboard was fried (I suspect due to unstable voltage) when travelling last year. The cost of replacing a water chamber is much cheaper than replacing the CPAP

FYI, if you pick a battery backup solution that uses a true sine wave, rather than a modified sine wave, then you will have effectively cleaned your power. It is a little more expensive, but much nicer to electronics (especially those with high frequency dsp's or crystals).

And as for the issue of water, I was planning (still don't have my equipment ) on using my zerowater filter as it claims to remove all dissolved solids from the water.

I've seen you make this point before and it is not really accurate. The water in my neighborhood turned bad for a day before they notified everyone it was unsafe to drink and that has happened twice. The temp of the water in my humidifier does not reach boiling and does not produce steam that is then condescend and in my case then goes through a charcoal filter... chlorine will certainly vaporize and get caught by the filter... organic matter will be killed by higher temps.... and on and on...

Even with that in mind I am not saying that this is necessary. I simply prefer to use "cleaner" water.

You should always clean a cpap machine with 1 part vinegar with 3 parts water and rinse well. Do it at least every 2 weeks. It is best not to use detergents or chemicals of any kind as they could get trapped and cause damage to the lungs.

I believe some of the manufacturers say not to use vinegar to clean the water tank. If you do use vinegar, realize it's not a magical "kill all bugs" sterilization solution, especially if diluted.

I also believe you're wrong about the detergents or chemicals. You SHOULD use care when choosing cleaners that aren't going to be harmful to you or the equipment.

Well where I live in central Iowa the water is so hard it comes out in little pebbles.... I have used distilled water in my machines and to be honest with you have never washed them out. Dont see the need using the distilled water.

Another option is the reverse osmosis system. I have it for drinking water (old Reader's Digest article converted me) and used it in a REMStar system for 7 years. I never had any deposits or discoloration in the humidifier. I've been using it in my S9 for 8 months and same story. Clean as a whistle.
I've never tried to compute the costs, but the RO system is used for drinking, humidifiers, ice-cubes, etc. We have extra hard water and an obscene amount of chlorine (to me at least) and RO was an absolute.

The only reason distilled water has always been recommended is because it prolongs the life of the machine.
A study at Mayo Clinic or John Hopkins. I cant remember which one. stated distilled water can cause Cancer when use through the C-pap machine. Distilled water is the manufactures idea. Check the 2 site mentioned.

You're half right - this is a conspiracy by Big Distilla to profit by killing off apnea patients. And the CPAP manufacturers claim the distilled water will prolong your machine so they can deny your warranty claim when you don't use it.
