I see "treats" and immediately remember this is what we rewarded our dogs and cats with...within this thread, I've gotten many a smile with this connotation .

Do the people who right[sic] marketing copy understand that? Do the doctors understand that? As long as the engineers understand it, I guess that is all that matters.
This is how the need for technical writers was created...misleading explanations that lead to confusion, ambiguity (unless intentionally written to be so, taken a class in that ), and frustration. Many highly technical professionals have such a huge base of expertise that what they think is a clear simple communication reads/sounds like incomprehensible jargon or meaningless complexity to the audience, so companies often turn writing over to the marketing types who are even less able to communicate technical information accurately. There is a difference in conceptual understanding of technical material between technical writers and technical experts, the former begin with details integrating them into a whole while the latter begin from a problem (whole) and break it down into constituant parts to be solved...the explanations of the latter reflects this approach regardless of the audience. Technical writers, at least the good ones, write to the needs of the targeted audience. I'm quite sure these brochures were written by the marketing dept because they are sale-oriented for doctors and equipment suppliers.
Don't forget -- it all has to be approved by the corporation's lawyers, who surely don't want it to be crystal clear in case they have to explain "what it
really means" in court.

Purposeful ambiguity is an acquired art.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt Too, I haven't met a lawyer yet who likes tekkie stuff; they dumb down everything, sometimes on purpose, sometime because they really
don't get it. A friend was married to a lawyer who used to argue cases before Supreme Courts (State and Fed), he was Southern and the more he went North to argue case, the more Southern he got until he sounded well like some of the worst of the tv ads...his opponents thought he was uneducated and boy did that tactic work for him, dumb as a fox he was...but a real technophobe.

The single feature that really grabs my attention is the climate control/heated humidification hose. The F&P 608 is the only other CPAP with that feature, but lacked some of the S8 features I wanted. I'm interested because I sleep in a very cool room and am very concerned about condensation and rainout, which the heated hose is apparently able to directly control.

I don't know 'bout the rest of you but the hose connection on the back of the unit means that I would have the back of the machine facing me to ensure I have maximum hose length. And, because I ck the pressure (using a 1 LED flashlight shone directly on the LED) if/when I wake up following an event, this would be very challenging as I am not adept at reading upsidedown .

Uh, Muse-Inc, training yourself at reading upside down is actually great training of your brain... but joking aside agree with you. That hose in the back was a stupid
marketing idea, totally ignoring functionality.
I get the feeling that these companies are playing catchup with each other, so ResMed has now belatedly joining the fray offering a "hose in the back" model, like Resprionics and Sandman tried 2 year ago. I wonder if they needed that to control the noise through the hose, or perhaps they made the design decision long ago, and they had to delay coming out with a new box because they were working on improving their algorithm and humidity... The move from S7 to S8 was a pure form without algorithm change.
Did you all realize they are also attempting to sell narrow diameter main hoses?
O.
P.S. Clicking on one of the arrow keys turns on the backlighting for a few secs. Do you use a flash light because it stays on too long?

Well duh...I didn't know that ...the things I learn hanging out here! THANKS!!! Will experiment tonight; if it's too bright (sensitive to light) will keep the flashlight next to the unit. Without my glasses, I'm not sure I could even read the LED from that upsidedown position!
