As an Aussie who grew up with eucalyptus oil as a remedy for many things - the one thing you CANNOT do with it is ingest it, so quite apart from it ruining your humidifier, it's not gonna do your body any good either - keep it on the 'oustide' only.

I use 3 drops of eucalyptus oil in a container of boiling water to inhale when I'm sick. I haven't had any issues yet. Then again, I use Eucalyptus Globulus, which is safe when in a vapor carrier. I believe Eucalyptus Radiata is also safe. There are two others that are not (search on Google), but I don't remember there genus/species.

For starters, try only ONE drop on a cotton ball next to the intake. It's strong stuff.

Ah yes, E. globulus, the Blue Gum Eucalylptus. The California State Tree. Or it shoud be. More of those in this state than Redwoods, I'd guess.

Xenablue, does anything eat eucalyptus leaves? Any insects? The Myrtaceae, the botanical family to which the eucalyptoids belong, are characterized by having lots of oil vesicles in their tissues, making them unpalatable (or worse?) to insects. I've noticed nothing seems to live in them here. Just crows.

I use a variety of oils with my CPAP, but would never out it in my water. I rigged a large paperclip that I tapped to the upper back of the machine do one of the "hooks" was sitting in front of the air intake filter. I simply put a drop or two of the oil on a cotton ball and then hook push it down into the bottom of the hook, right where the air enters the machine. aromas from the oils are immediately sucked into the machine. It's easy to adjust how much you inhale by limiting how much you put on the cotton ball. It also makes the bedroom "stink pretty". But at least I can breathe.

I noticed this thread is 5 years old, but this is where google lead me. I just wanted to say that eucalyptus oil can melt plastic. NOT sure it's the best thing to add to a humidifier. Also, Eucalyptus oil is highly poisonous. Never use orally and be cautious when using topically.

Once again the ONLY thing that's to be put, IN A HH is distilled water, steam distilled is preferred! Jim

I have played around a lot with EO's in fact a few years back I had a business selling various EO concoctions online. I agree that whether EO's actually do anything is very much an open topic for debate. Yes Eucalyptus is alleged to be good for sinus congestion. I use it all the time in my sauna. Bergamot (a form or orange) is supposed to be good for improving sleep. I think there is something to be said for Bergamot. I have used it rubbing a few drops on my thighs and I do think it helped my sleep to some degree.

I also agree that as mentioned above, you should not put any EO's directly in your humidifier tank as EO's can attach the plastic. If you want to play around with EO's, get an ultrasonic nebulizer that claims to be for EO use. I have this one:

It is also made of plastic so its not clear if its a special EO resistant plastic. At least if your EO's muck up something, it won't be your CPAP machine.

My mum has severe asthma and has been putting eucalyptus oil in her BiPAP humidifier water every night for the past few years with absolutely no issues what so ever!
It doesn't gum up the tubing.......although it might if you were to never clean it out, but with weekly maintenance it's no problems.

My mum does it cause she doesn't like the smell of the distilled water and it helps open/clear her airways.

PS - I won't risk putting it in my humidifier.

I started using Neilmed Nasogel for my dry sinus issues after my DME said the other hospital in town recommended for their patients. Works great for me, lots better than saline spray. Good luck!

I used eucalyptus oil in a warm air humidifier. It put a heavy oil coating on the inside of the machine and water tank. I have soaked it with vinegar/water and cannot remove it. Personally , I would NEVER put it in my machine.

It is not recommended to put anything in your water chamber except distilled water. In an emergency, you can put any potable water (except carbonated or flavored) in the tank and clean it out later.

There are some things that you can add scents after the humidifier, but I don't know if they're recommended either.
