Clarification of "return insurance" on cpap.com

Post by falvesjr » Fri Jan 15, 2010 4:54 pm

Can any of you who have purchased our host's mask return insurance please clarify it for me? I understand that if you buy the insurance, you can send the mask back within 30 days and get the mask's purchase price refunded. I assume that they keep the money you paid for the insurance. But what about if you don't return the mask? Do you get the insurance money back after the 30 days? It just seems to me that, with rare exceptions, the cost of the mask return insurance is outrageous. I can't imagine paying that much more for a mask just in case I want to send it back, even if I do get my money back for the mask. I realize that returned masks cannot be resold as new, but what is their fate? Do they get resold as used? Are they sold to a liquidator as used? Are they destroyed?

Please understand that this is not a criticism of the program or of our host! I'm sure that some people use this service and are very happy with it. I'm merely wondering if you get your insurance money back if don't return the mask and what the ultimate fate of the returned masks is.

Why don't you just call them, they're very nice and would have no trouble answering your questions. They're in business, your money is your business and I'm sure they can respect that.

To falvesjr....Think about insurance in general....at the end of the year does your auto insurance company refund your premium if you do not have a claim??? Does your Homeowners Ins, Company send you a check if your home does not burn down??? That's the way insurance works...you pay for protection.

I don't understand what the insurance would be for? Other than the money for the sale what would Johnny be out if you returned the mask? All the major mask manufacturers have a 30 day (and most of them will extend that to 45 days or longer) return policy on their masks. The company I work for is very small fish compared to Johnny and we can use this policy. I guess I'm just confused why you would have to pay to return the mask.
Canada...I can't say anything nice, so I won't say anything at all.

So many cats, so few recipes.

LSAT, of course, you're right!

However, my car insurance costs about 2% of the value of the car per year, and my home insurance, about two-tenths of 1% of the value of the house... What gets me about the return insurance is that we're talking about a cost that seems unreasonable to me -- I have seen it vary between 22%, for more popular masks, to 60% for less popular ones. I'm sure there are exceptions with numbers both lower and higher than what I've seen, but having looked through a bunch of masks, 20%-60% seems "common". Would you pay that much for insurance for your car or home? You might even want to, but I think most people would not be able to... Yes, yes, we're comparing oranges to apples, but since the goal of the return insurance program, I presume, is to sell more masks and increase customer satisfaction, it might be more satisfying to the customer if they knew that they wouldn't be overpaying for their mask if they decide to keep it.

I guess I just hate insurance in general, and no matter how little or how high the cost of insurance is, I always feel ripped-off! But I guess that along with death and taxes, insurance is something we can't avoid!

The 1st 2 masks I bought from cpap.com, I bought insurance, and but kept the masks.

The next 2, I bought insurance, and returned the masks. Return UPS shipping was included in the cost of insurance, and I received a refund for the price of the mask.

The next 1, I bought from cpapauction for less than the price of insurance. So I figured that even if it didn't fit me, I was still ahead of the game.

Exactly! It just doesn't make sense to me to buy return insurance... But to each his own, eh?

The insurance at least partly covers the expense of having to re-sterilize and repackage the masks when they're sent back. They can't just send them out to others without those things.

That would assume that returned masks are repackaged and sold as new.

Which I don't think they can be. I think it would be illegal for them to be resold as new. They can be resold, just not as new, and I don't think that cpap.com sells used equipment to the public. Hence the question I posed earlier: What happens to masks returned via the insurance program? Are they resold as used (to a liquidator or other "non-public" entity)? Are they destroyed? Are they sent back to the manufacturer?

MY guess is returned masks go onto cpapauctions as used. I doubt it's legal to sell them as "new" regardless of re-packaging.

If someone objects to the insurance, the easy solution is to NOT buy it. If you don't like the mask, put it up for auction yourself. I've done that several times. It's more hassle, but you usually come out ahead financially over buying insurance.

(I think all cpaptalk participants should kick in according to their ability to pay and furnish me with "free" mask insurance. After all, it's my constitution RIGHT!!! )

Don't have to convince me of your immaturity. You are in constant hostile, attack mode, and sarcasm is your normal mode of speech. Once again, I have tried to be nice, but it seems to have the same effect as trying to teach a pig to sing.
