For anyone not old enough to remember, Eddie Murphy's character on SNL was a parody of The Little Rascals (Our Gang) character Buckwheat, shown below:

Our Gang started in the 1920s and was produced until 1944. Although some find the racial stereotyping (which was common at the time) offensive, this was actually one of the first integrated series of films where blacks and whites were portrayed as equals. I spent many happy hours watching the exploits of Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, sweet Darla, Porky, Butch and Froggy (the one with the funny voice). They had a dog with a ring around his eye named "Pete the Pup". My dad and I would often watch the show together, so I have fond memories of that.

[Just for the record, I'm not old enough to have watched the original films. I saw them much later, after they were in syndication on television!]
