The first thing I thought was, well, yeah, what do you expect? It's a
CPAP forum, not a surgery forum, not a sleep apnea forum, not a dental appliance forum, not a weight loss forum--oh, wait, that's addressed below!
Anyway, really, if it's helpful--and it sure is--who really cares who sponsors it? If I want information that's more in-depth about surgery or other options, there are sleep apnea forums I can go to other than this one. If I want the best cpap help, I come here. There certain isn't a ban on talking about other things. Way back when, I posted about my experience with a dentist when looking at the dental option. The dentist (who specializes in making dental appliance for OSA patients) even said that if CPAP was working for me, I should stick with that as that's the best answer. The guy could have made bunch of money off of me, yet he was honest that for me, CPAP was best. And since my OSA is just into the moderate category, I was definitely a candidate for the dental stuff. (He also only charged me half the consultation fee since I wasn't going to have one made.)

My doctor and I discussed surgery - but I have so many obstructions in my nose and throat (not to mention jaw position) that it would require a major overhaul (short of a tracheostomy - which has many issues itself) and likely not be as effective as CPAP therapy. Therefore, I started CPAP therapy. Since starting CPAP, I have visited this forum daily and it has provided me with much needed education as well as humor, but also the main thing I think this board is for - support! Coming here criticizing this groups efforts is like going to a Weight Watchers meeting and shouting "What are you doing here - don't you know there is a surgery out there that will fix you?"! We are here for support and that is what we get - except when people come here with other agendas.
I LOVE this!! Perfect!
Oh, and I sure wish I was getting paid to post on here!

So...Aviator...I assume that you are a OSA sufferer since you are up at 3 AM with nothing to do but aggitate!!! If you think surgery is the way to go...tell us about yours...or are you a hose head??? I do admit though it is a lively discussion.

This bunch is famous for having hissy fits about almost any subject. Two that come to mind are Vaseline and bananas. Er, those are two entirely separate subjects. Aren't they?

Heck, if wanted to be one of those, I'd have picked up an application at the first B&M DME I dealt with.
Heck, I'd have become a state/federal politician.

I assume from your post that the
local politics is all cleaned up over there?

In my neck of the woods we've had no one indicted or investigated and for those that I come in contact with I believe their "yes" and their "no" and you don't get the double talk and "what did he/she just say". Programs are administered on the local level, from what I have seen, more effectively than at the state & federal level.

For the record, I would like to say that I agree with the point made in the title of this thread as written by the original poster:
Respectfully, who runs this board?
Yes, I agree that Johnny runs this board VERY respectfully.

I know I am a little late getting in on this but I have to add that I am NOT a paid plant. I am a normal person and enjoy this forum very much. Yes CPAP.com hosts this site, but in no way do they influence anything I say, nor have my words ever been cencored, and I am not one for mincing words.
Are there other alternatives. I for one will not let surgeons cut on me without a really good reason. I love my APAP and while maybe some of the alternatives will work for others, CPAP is a great non-invasive fix to my problem and I would encourage others to try it before surgery any day.

Hey! Speak for yourself. Just ask my wife and kids. Not sure why, but they seem to have given me a new name ... Abby Normal ...

Not in spite of my neurological issues, but because of them, we love to laugh at situations. So, you might imagine Young Frankenstein is one of my favorite movies.
In fact, the other scene I love is where Dr. Frankenstein is playing the violin to call the "monster" and insists that he
must climb on his one. He CAN do it. He MUST do it.
So, it is with our own experience. Whether we take the path of CPAP or surgery. Each of us must face this on our own, in order to reach for a solution with which we can live. I certainly chose CPAP/BiPAP/ASV. I don't regret it. Not choosing. Not moving forward. That would be the saddest choice of all.

Now they will say I am on salary, make strategic posts and send PMs.

Got to make this quick, because I need to go to the bank and deposit all those checks I have been getting to promote CPAP equipment
Seriously, though, I have quite severe OSA. I found in researching all over the web that the worse your OSA is, the less effective alternative therapies are. And my doctor concurred. So, for me, xPAP is the answer, and probably will always be the answer. Even after I lose this weight I have been fighting for years (which is finally starting to come off!), a large part of which was caused my ineffective metabolism to to damage from hypoxia at night.
There some surgeries that on the surface are more effective that xPAP, but they generally run in the 40-50 percent range. xPAP is rated at about 40 percent. But it is low only because of problems with noncompliance. If people were compliant, the percentage would probably be well over 85 percent.
I will not go back. Sleeping now without the hose would literally be risking my life.
