The mask looks like a Resmed Activa LT.

He needs to tape his mouth, he opens it when sleeping.

FWIW, I don't think the machine was just a Hollywood prop. I listened carefully when Owen removed the mask, and I could hear the air blowing. (Ok, ok, I rewound and listened carefully. Twice. )

I've seen some of the later episodes, and I like the show a lot.

Mask looks like a Resmed, possibly the Mirage activa LT the dial on the forehead gives it away from the rest of the mask. I just went through all mine and the Resmed is the only mask I carry that has the dial on the forehead piece. Machine does look like mine!

Resmed doesn't have one on their site that I can find that looks like that. Nice clock on it : ) Humidifier doesn't look like it would work very well without a way to control the water entering the hose - looks like an open chamber.

Sheesh, you guys are picking it apart! I am just happy to see it on the show at all. Maybe it will prompt some non-compliant people to use their equipment.

I absolutely agree - and hope my comments weren't taken as 'picking' - just thought it was interesting. I too am happy OSA therapy is getting exposure, as long as they don't do something silly that makes it a joke or otherwise not taken seriously.

The Biggest Loser shows contestants using machines and masks. This season was a first that I noticed that.

Yes, it's definitely a ResMed. I went to the ResMed site to see what they're showing...they show the machine separate from the humidifier, but they snap together for use. There is a dial on top that control the humidifier level. The clock is separate, sitting in front of the machine But yes, that looks like a nice clock! I would buy a machine with a clock like that...Nice big numbers for us very near--sighted OSAers!

If it's a real ResMed I'd love to have one for travel. I looked at their product page and don't see it. Could you send me a link?

Gasp, you've got the right page. They are using one of the S8 IIs (check into the Elite II or Autoset II). That page shows just the machine. On the left, you can click on "humidifers". The H4i is the current model. The machine and humidifer snap together (which is how you saw it on the show).
I have the Autoset, and I think it is good for travel. Easy to setup, and pretty lightweight. I haven't had to fly yet with it, but have car traveled with it.

I don't a clock with that large a number, facing the bed instead of straight up to the ceiling. It's nice to be able to just glance over and see the time. All the units I see have a smaller digital read out and are on top of the unit.

You're right! I did hear it upon rewinding. Wonder if they had the pressure set too high and he didn't breath with it, instead opened his mouth trying to breath. I too like the show. It doesn't gloss over all of life's issues and it has great character development.

If they're going to portray it, should it be 'warts and all'? (You know - GERD, gas, aerophagia, mask lines, hollow eyes...) I like the idea that his xPAP therapy might be a consistent theme throughout one or more seasons and the idea that it would slowly show improvement in his health. If Resmed is a sponsor, they'll likely gloss over the earthier truths about xPAP.

In a word, no! I would hope that the presence of xPAP therapy on a national television show would be treated as an everyday(night) thing, kept in the background for the most part (as it has been on this show so far, from what I've seen). If it comes up in conversation on the show as a passing thing, great. Increasing awareness like this is hugely positive, IMO.

Showing the "warts" (that some - not all - of us experience) would create a negative impression about xPAP, and I think the attitude we bring to therapy makes all the difference re: attaining success. So I wouldn't want laypeople to see Owen looking haggard or experiencing GERD, as it would likely dissuade them from otherwise considering a sleep study.

I totally agree Bleeping Beauty. The idea would be to encourage people, not discourage them.
