Everything about someone on eBay selling "RESMED ResScan 3.7 Software for ResMed S8 series CPAPs" for $2.95 screams if it sounds to good to be true, etc.

The greedy part of me says "go for it! Sure beats ordering from Australia at $99 plus, what is it, $20 shipping, and maybe taxes or whaterever else might be charged".

But the nagging suspicions

Anybody actually bought this from eBay, received, and used the download and not in jail yet?

Am getting ready to order the Resmed AutoSet II.

Check the Seller's rating and read the feedback. See what other buyers have said about the product and whether any of them are responding from jail.

I suspect that the eBay Seller has repackaged what is available for free on the Internet. Getting a copy from an eBay Seller is safer, in my opinion, than downloading a copy from the Internet. Going to jail for buying something that costs $2.95 plus S&H from a registered eBay Seller would make national news. I haven't seen such a news story so suspect that it is as likely as finding a snowball in Hell.

You can always order the full retail price product. The reporting software is well worth the full price for what it tells you about your CPAP-enabled therapy.

If you "own" it (original software and bought it legally) and it's not installed on your computer, you can sell it for whatever you want to. I agree, this situation smells a little fishy. If the seller is selling "copies", then that would be illegal.

Don't you guys know about torrents? Anyone can download software images and burn them on a DVD. Most would try to sell it for more than $3.00. The same thing with Encore Pro 1.8 software. If you are not a health care professional registered with the company you can't have that software. The work-around is to buy a DVD made by someone else, or just download the torrent. You cannot buy the licensed version.

The Ebay offer is for information on how to download Resmed 3.7. If you know torrents, you don't need to spend $3.00. Even though the deal is cheap, that person is making thousands on information available for free, and the software is just as "illegal", although I don't hesitate to use this source.

Ask an attorney. Most good ones these days charge upwards of $300/hour.

You might also want to ask the seller how he/she does what he/she does?

If you want a "legal" copy, buy from the manufacturer. At least Resmed still sells their software to users. Respironics does not provide this option for EncorePro but does provide the EncoreViewer option (which isn't available for their latest and greatest PR-1).

Anyone can download software images and burn them on a DVD.

Some people can't - they don't have the skill set and tools to find, download, and burn a DVD. Some members do not know how to unzip a file. Others do not have the tools and/or do not know how to create a DVD from a downloaded Iso file. Still others may be cautious about downloading files from the Internet for fear of viruses, etc.

If everyone had the skill set and tools and were willing to take the risk, the eBay Resscan and EncorePro sellers would not have any customers and would soon fold up shop.

I ordered the software from Australia for $107 USD total delivered cost. Before that I checked out the ebay offer and thinking it too good to be true asked the seller a couple of questions. The seller answered one question, but did not if the software was legal. I asked myself one question; is just over $100 worth the penalties of possible legal action.

Thanks frogman for giving me an idea of what my cost may be! I was thinking there might be an import tax. Doesn't matter really as I want the software.

Initially, I, as well, asked the seller for info on his offer - no word yet, but that no longer matters aside from the curiosity factor.

I've looked into the torrent subject a little and my personal choice is not to be a "peer" to the "seed" and where there appears to be an anonymity issue with IP addresses, plus my not really being at ease going the torrent route for software anyway ....will just go the usual and yes, legal route.

But torrents have opened a whole new world to me...so will see what lives there!

Don't you know that you can go to any good library and get law books? Who needs lawyers.

You can download Visual studio express for free and write your own software.

Anyone can get an accounting book and do their own companies accounting.

Free does not mean easy. Nor does it mean people want to invest the time to learn to do it them selves.
I once had a boy friend who felt car maintenance was too expensive so he changed the oil himself on our car - $3000 dollars and a new engine later .... I never let anyone who is not a pro (and insured) touch my car.

The seller is selling a download link for the software.

What if the link is to Resmeds very own site? And what if Resmed allows anyone to download the software at their site just by putting in a fake doctors name and address
