DSM,
I believe it is true that those of us that had to fight off the germs on our own (Born '40) developed a better resistance. Very few vaccines. Penicillin hadn't been released to the public, etc. etc. So, if it was around we were likely to get it. I remember my mother wanting me to get any childhood disease that came through. "Better to get it when you're young and can fight it off than later." And when I see some of the kids who get sick because the wind changed directions I have to wonder, did the sterile environment and protection from the elements modern living and parenting insisted on not allow their bodies to develop the antibodies they need.

The first time i saw my sleep dr I felt so out of place. Even in the sleep lab I feel out of place as well. I am sure the younger sleep apeona suffers have felt the same way I did when I first set foot in the sleep labs for sleep test!
You're very lucky. I suffered from sleep apnea for years, fell asleep during afternoon meetings at work, drifted off while driving, and probably risked my life and other people's more times than I care to think about. My ego and pride kept getting in the way of getting to the doctor to be tested.
My brother was diagnosed and started using CPAP, but still I ignored all the signs. At one point during an international flight a fellow passenger was kind enough to come up to me, even though he didn't know me from Adam, and suggest that I might want to be tested. Unfortunately my ego got in the way again, I got upset with him and blew him off. I wish that somehow I could find him now and tell him how much I really appreciated his suggestion.
Finally, the situation got so serious that I had to accept the fact that I might need help. I was probably 49 or 50 at the time, and I felt very much the same way you must have sitting in the waiting room to see the doctor for testing. I felt really uncomfortable, out of place, and actually thought about just walking out and not going through with the testing.
Of course now, a decade later, I kick myself for not having gone to the doctor sooner. Looking back it's pretty obvious that my father and both my grandfathers had sleep apnea that was never diagnosed. I probably would have been diagnosed with it when I was 25 if I had gone to the doctor - assuming that the doctor was knowledgeable about it.

rachris 2,
Welcome to the site. I'm 48, too, and I still feel like I did when I was 12. Maybe a little less energetic...

37, and celebrating my 2 month cpap anniversary. I've almost certainly had sleep apnea for over a decade--maybe closer to 2 since I've been a terrible snorer since I was at least 18 (the first year I shared a room with someone else)--but didn't get treatment earlier because of a wonderful medical practitioner who told me "there's no way you have sleep apnea." Maybe that's why I still don't feel any less sleepy despite 2 months of relentless cpap use. A lot of sleepless nights to make up for.
