This whole thing is appalling.
Which Bible do the Christian Science adherents use?
Certainly not the one I do. Have they ever read this verse?
"Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a]drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give."
(Mat. 10:8)
I have had prayer on my behalf, for which I am thankful. Did it help? Yes, indeed. But my answer came from the One to whom the prayer was made, NOT the one who said the prayer.

Other people's religions always strike one as odd.
As for the complexity of the present health care proposals, I don't understand why Congress can't simply vote on whether to extend Medicare to everyone. Sure would cut to the chase, as well as saving a lot of trees...

Why not? My own religion strikes me as odd.

I do trash the idea of paying for prayer. Totally ridiculous. Both for the payee and the payer.[/quote]
Why is paying for prayer "totally ridiculous"? We pay people to use their talents on our behalf all the time. Often to do things we could easily do ourselves.
We pay comedians to make us laugh. We pay psychologists to do nothing but talk to us. We pay to have our taxes done. Shoeshines. Haircuts. Waiters. Do you think prayer is worthless?
Obviously, those who are willing to pay for prayer on their own behalf believe the payee can do it better than they can themself. Enough better to be worth the cost.
Praying for yourself is a selfish act. And a bit silly. Doesn't God already know you are sick and would like to be healed? What kind of God would withhold healing until you "ask politely"? The only legitimate prayer in that case is "Thy Will be done."
I will pray for your better understanding, Rooster. (No thanks necessary, I take credit cards...)

Please don't. I am quite happy with my current position.
So, does this mean medicine men and witches can collect for their healing ceremonies too? The government can’t single out a religion for coverage and leave others out.
The government should not be encouraging religious practices of any group by paying them to exercise those religious practices. Government neutrality toward religion does not exist when the government encourages religion.
Will the citizens pay for a computer to pray for me?

About Information Age Prayer
Information Age Prayer is a subscription service utilizing a computer with text-to-speech capability to incant your prayers each day. It gives you the satisfaction of knowing that your prayers will always be said even if you wake up late, or forget.
We use state of the art text to speech synthesizers to voice each prayer at a volume and speed equivalent to typical person praying. Each prayer is voiced individually, with the name of the subscriber displayed on screen.
At Information Age Prayer we think our service should be used like a prayer supplement, to extend and strengthen a subscriber's connection with God. Traditional prayer is an integral part of this connection and should never be forgone, even after signing up.
You can subscribe for yourself, or you can purchase a subscription as a gift to friends or family.

Absolutely! Heck, it's not like it's REAL money. It comes from taxes...

The government shouldn't be in the healthcare business either, but they will be. Damn the Constitution, full speed ahead...

Sure! Why not. In fact, they'll even buy you a computer so you can access the service. Anything goes...it's all free...it's Obamacare!

I haven't learned to leave some questions unasked. Me and my big mouth again.
Oh well, I will enjoy a new computer.

So, your pastor doesn't get a salary? Even if he raises the dead???
(I know you were referring to the "Freely give" part, but that's an odd verse to choose to support that healing comes ONLY from God, btw...)

Dear LinkC,
You are a nice guy and I enjoy your spirit and humor. I don't think we are in much disagreement.
I did not by any means intend to imply such a thought : "..Only healing comes from God."
I myself am proof that it does not. I would not be alive now if it were not for a doctor's wisdom.
(I literally went crawling into the E.R. late one night in 1986 asking for help.... (a story for another day) )
Also, I believe you are confusing the everyday life of a Christian with the biblical mandate by which pastors and church leaders are to be supported, and that is with what we call the tithe.
As regards the practise of prayer, I think the Bible is very clear. I could expound upon this further, but suffice it to say that I am a firm believer in the obeying the exhortation of James 5:14 -- "..... and pray for one another, that ye may be healed."
The idea of paying someone to do that is repulsive, if fact, I would not allow it for myself.
Regards,
Jay
