They always have those "HR" excuses - with me is that they wanted "fresh blood" ie someone without gray hair or experience (more expensive).
When I was young I always got the excuse of "not enough experience" now I get the reverse or "too much extra baggage" as one head hunter called it.

I am still burnt up about a job I interviewed for last year - with Parasuco Jeans - they were looking for someone because they were upgrading their software - I had previously worked with their antique software package, I have previously work in the jeans manufacturing, I knew the new software, every head hunter in town contacted me for this position and I couldn't get past HR. When I informed each headhunter that I couldn't get an real interview with them they were stunned

Try the headhunters. Adjust your resume for each job you try for - also try for some temp positions in sales for over the holidays. It maybe a bit late but since you do work with jewelry can you make some quick and work the Christmas bazaars?

Well, that's just it, I've never really had any experience with jewelry. They told me in the interview that they would train me for EVERYthing I would be doing. I've been in the graphics design industry (specialized in printing) for the past 11 years, but that market has pretty much crashed... I'm not even LOOKING in that field anymore, which is a shame because it's pretty much ALL I know how to do. And I'm good at it!

*sigh* I thought having a strong eye for detail would help me, I guess not...

Cygnusia, Muse-Inc, and anyone else who is currently unemployed....my heart goes out to you. My dear sister has been out of work for over a year-and-a-half now. She has sent out hundreds of resumes and has had very few interviews even. It's difficult not to just give up, I know. I've never seen such a poor job market (and I've been around for a long time!). There are very few jobs offered in our local newspaper anymore. I hope that things turn around soon for everyone.

If you can find a copy of "What color is my parachute" It has ideas in those books on how to network, how to rework your resume to make it look good in other fields.
You kind of need to consider a crash course in sales - marketing your self - really hard to do for some people. Forget the official job market and start going through you list of connections. Call them and ask if they can refer you to someone who might know something in any related field. Don't beg for a job or they will clam up, just ask for a reference. Consider this "sales Job" your full time job.

Also look for training opportunities. I took a government student loan to get more update computer languages and they put me into an internship which led to a full time contract.

Which is another point - look for contract positions. Sell your design services on contract to other companies. Take your last salary add the cost of benefits and divide to get your hourly rate. (It also has tax benefits to work this way.)

Change your way of thinking from "where can I get a job" to "How can I produce income? What have I got to sell?"

I made rip-away costumes for porn websites to pay my way through that course. I taught belly dancing to porn actresses focusing on .. ahem .. "floor work" . Visualize if you will a 50 + plump matron wriggling on the floor demonstrating how to show your crotch while doing belly rolls ..... in front of all these hot young things.....

Well, I'm not belly dancing, but it's still pretty far out of my comfort zone.

I start orientation today at a distribution center. It's work, and it gives me time to find something in my chosen field.
