I would wake up with the machine off and the mask on, which is the worst of all possible scenarios! Here I'm getting sores on my nose in the service of cpap therapy, and there's no therapy! I wasn't sure if I was doing it or if there was something wrong with my machine.
So I did an experiment and started taping a dixie cup to the off/on button. But I had to be able to access it from the remote side by lifting that edge so I could turn it off and on due to pressure and when I got up. So that didn't resolve any ambiguity about who was responsible for this, me or the machine. So then I started stacking things on the cup like a book (kind of like the Cat in the Hat...). My little research study was put on hold by a nose welt that kept me off cpap for awhile. Now I'm trying again and we'll see.
Oddly, I felt pretty good following some of those nights where I maybe only slept with the CPAP on for 3-4 hours (sometimes better than when I slept with it all night). I started to entertain the possibility that maybe all I need is a mask, any mask, (and a little carbon dioxide...?!) to feel better. No pressure needed! I'm going to test this hypothesis by using other masks with no therapy. Tonight I'll wear a Storm Trooper full face mask. Tomorrow night a clown mask.
