I had a tonsillectomy at 41 years of age.
If I knew then what I know now, I probably wouldn't have done it. I almost died from loss of blood (they still don't know from where - even after many diagnostic procedures including pillcam). After spending nearly a week in intensive care, my recovery took months.
At the time, I had not been diagnosed with OSA. However the ENT removed the uvula as my airway seemed tight to him.
Years after, I have not had the recurring throat infections I used to experience almost every other week. However, because of the complications, it was the closest I have been to the "other side"...
Apparently, as an adult, the risks of complications increase exponentially...

You are less than a week out after the surgery. You will start feeling better shortly, just don't over do it. I had my tonsils out in June of 09 and also had a UPPP done. I had some pain which was managed with Tylenol 3 in a liquid form. I went home from the hospital the next morning after the surgery. This was the best thing I ever did. It has helped to turn my life around. It isn't for everyone but for those who need it, it will change their life for the better.

My Daughter had hers out when she was around 20. She was in a lot of pain first day . Two days later we called her house to see how she was doing . NO one answered . So we call her in laws .. No one answered there either. No one had cell phones in early 90 s. So we drove in 35 miles in a panic thinking she was in the emergency rooom! NO emergency room .. She was out with in- laws eating pancakes LOL She recovered quite well.
When I was a baby family took watches sleeping with me. Because I would "stop breathing" I had mine out at 1 year old . Then had them removed again when I was around 10 years old because they grew back. My present Dr says I STILL have tonsills in my 60s.

I cannot give a recommendation as I have not had the surgery (although I'm contemplating it). You may want to read what Dr. Kasey Li has to write about the subject. The thinking out of Palo Alto (at least his, I believe) is that there are ways to suture that tighten the area and keep it from collapsing (I may not be explaining this perfectly). It is sometimes referred to as a lateral pharyngoplasty (BUT note that the term doesn't mean the same thing to everyone) or modified pharyngoplasty, and the uvula is preserved. I don't know how many surgeons have been trained in this procedure. Also read what Kasey Li writes about preserving as much of the mucosa as possible during tonsillectomy. If you read this information, it should give you questions to ask your ENT so that you can assess how much he/she knows about the procedures. (Personally--and admittedly I've been biased--I would ask an ENT whether they currently do UPPPs, and if they said "yes", I would screen them out.) Again, I can't endorse any of these procedures, having not had them.

I had my tonsils out and a UPPP last spring. My doctor also did something with putting some stitches in the throat to tighten things up. It has made a world of difference for me, but this is something you really need to research and talk to your doctor and others who have had it.
most people once your past your teen years will take more than a week to recover. I was off at least three, maybe more, but I also had a broken hand at the same time.

That's exactly the sort of scaremongering phrase you say to someone to DISCOURAGE them from getting surgery, which suggests you never got the surgery and wouldn't recommend it to anyone, because your symptoms went away by themselves at age 35. But maybe you actually did get the surgery at age 35, and that's why your symptoms weny away. We don't really know what happened, do we? Because you never say.
