The machine could be a great machine if the patient software is made available and the annoying beeps and clicks were eliminated. An option to have an on/off back light to the LCD screen would be nice too since i have to use a flashlight to read the LCD screen.

I have these features/options on all three generations of my runner's watches/computers. All three - software (provided with the watch/computer), ability to turn on/off various beeps/alarms, and a backlite LCD - were on my first one (purchased in 2004). It boggles my mind that the Respironics machines, including their most recent one, the PR1, that are 5X more expensive (online price) to 10X more expensive (B&M DMEs) than my first runner's watch/computer do not provide these features/options, even as a separately-priced option. If they had to sell just to user's, Respironics would IMHO quickly go out of business and deservedly so.

Another possibility (I have done this in loud comupters) is cover the sound hole
with scotch tape, it will greatly muffle the sound but not completely disable it.
It can be removed easily, reduces the damage risk, and might even keep the warranty
if there are no seals to break when you take it apart.

My wife hates all the lights she can't understand why a sleep machine has to have bright lights that shine all night ... an i have to agree with her

I removed the speaker from my Respironics about 4 months ago, and have had no problems. It is soooo nice to not have that loud beep when I get up in the middle of the night.

I've done a lot of circuit board elextronics work, so desoldering two points and removing the speaker was super simple, and there was no chance of damage enything else in the process.

If anyone wants me to perform this on their system, all you have to do is ship it to me. Or if your are local to Seattle, just swing by.

Geez, it is just a beep, and not a real loud one at that. I have never thought of it as being annoying, it has just never come across to me like that and the fact is that it is there for a reason and that is to alert me of a problem. It just boggles my mind why someone would tear into their machine and start desoldering just because of a beep. To each their own I suppose.

In hospitals they have to provide the best health care speakers for the patients because help them and will provide motivational funny thoughts, making it funnier and way more relevant.

Disabling the beeps is not possible on the original firmware. I understand this was added in the later versions.

The idiocy of devices that are designed by people who never use them is fun to lampoon. We have a new top-loading balance (a scale) in the lab that was made by a respected manufacturer. However, when my colleagues plugged it in, they found that the 1.5" x 3" LCD readout was backlit by incredibly bright BLUE LEDs. It's so bright it hurts your eyes. If you look into the display for more than a few seconds, which you have to do when weighing anything, when you look away from it, you see a yellow/green rectangle until your eyes readjust. Silly choice someone made. Sillier that the folks using it didn't box it up and return it to the vendor with a nasty note as to the recent ancestry of the Marketing dweeb (technical term) who thought a bright blue LCD readout would be cool.

The beeps really don't bother me since they happen when I actually am doing something to the machine. If they occurred at random times like when the machine ups the pressure, that would be poor design, but having a beep tells you that the machine got your input and is acting on it. But since some users want feedback and others don't it doesn't seem like too much to ask for the ability to turn it off.

What annoys me is the humidifier light. Why have a white LED on a device meant to be next to your bed at night? I don't need or want a night light. Obviously they thought about this since the firmware allows you to disable the backlight for the humidifier setting. Why the hell they didn't think it would be just as useful to disable the humidifier light itself is beyond me.

Let's not forget these are the morons who put a really crappy 1980's quality LCD display on a 1000 dollar machine.

1) It's hard to read unless you're directly over the machine.
2) Earlier models did not have a backlight so you could read the display in the dark.
3) If you want to look at the display during the night to see what the pressure is, nothing you can do will turn the display on without turning the machine off and on, which may change the pressure.
4) If you try to use a flashlight to see the display, it's almost impossible to read because of the crappy 1980's style LCD. You have to get the flashlight and your eyes at just the right angle.
5) Even though it's an APA (all points addressable) display that can display text in any size, the text is tiny. It lists "10.0 cmH2O" in one line across the screen. GEEZ, put the NUMBER big enough to take up most of the screen and then list "cmH2O" in small text below the number. I almost never need to check what the units are in the middle of the night, but knowing the pressure would be useful.

I don't know about you guys, but when I'm using the machine, it's not easy to get out of bed and center my eyeballs over the display. You can't tilt the machine to get a better look because of the water tank. Then I have to fumble for the flashlight and can't see the *#@&#!!! display anyway.

Lots of us old geezers who use CPAP have pretty bad eyesight at the best of times, may be blurry at night anyway, and may not be wearing our glasses with our mask.

Geez, if you can't use a nice color LCD like the competition, at least use a quality monochrome LCD designed in the last decade or so that has good contrast and a wide viewing angle.

Doesn't anyone at PR actually use these machines before they start selling a new model? Or even use them after they start selling them and fix the problems?

Well, you can't expect a company like Phillips to be expert in lighting.


I have the same issues with the display, but being a newbie dont know what I'm missing.

BTW, I haven't noticed much beeping. Is this something that's changed since the OP?

NO.

I guess everyone is different on their sensitivity to sound. Never really paid attention to it.
